Alternatives to university - non academic children

My son will be going into his second year at college in September - is doing two BTECs and 1 A level

curious to know what alternative routes those who have just finished college but do not want to go to uni? Son is adamant it's not for him and given he doesn't enjoy studying I have to agree.

I once worked with someone who was excellent at all sorts. He even published book reviews. However he didn’t actually read the books. He got others to tell them their views in a few lines and consolidated it. Completely dyslexic

My very popular skilled gas fitter who earns a great deal and is always over booked it also profoundly dyslexic. He told me at school he was labelled thick (7Os). He told me once about how he learn it all and did his qualifications and recerts.
he tells me he can only read familiar stuff.

Everyone nowadays wants to go to university, but many fail or do not get good jobs after. My son works in trades, loves it and earns good money. Trades people are really needed where I live and business are willing to pay big money to get them.

agree @livelovelough24 I’d bloody celebrate if my DC qualified as a gas fitter or electrician as they’ll never be out of work

Lidl and Aldi I think do decent training programmes. After a certain number of years you get a company car too I think. Lifeguarding is good as usually involves some other aspects of leisure centre. Could go down coaching route or management route. It's sad schools just push people to uni and don't think about other routes as much, I hope your child finds something he enjoys.

I think with those subjects he has quite a range of possibilities. Depending on interest (his) I'd look at sports therapists / coaching / fitness training etc.

Thanks for all the replies - agreed I did say he wasn't academic but he just got a distinction for his business sttudies exam and on his way for a distinction for his BTEC.

needs to work much harder for his A Level and needs to really start thinking what direction he wants to go in.

he recently said he should have done an electricians course so I may try and get him some work experience to see if it's something he may enjoy.
