Hello can anyone help me it's our first a levels.

So DD wants bristol and second choice bath.

She gets Bristol / she accepts ?
Then chooses accmd ?

She doesn't get Bristol and she gets bath.

As a second choice will she have a chance at accmd on campus still ? .

She gets neither , what does does she do and if she gets B in her chosen subject which isn't enough for Bristol or bath...but gets A A and maybe even an A star with a B can she pivot through clearing to one of those subjects she got an A In ?

Can she pivot for bath and Bristol and otherwise she needs to get on phones ?

What can I do to help or do the students do it themselves ?

I don’t think she can pivot automatically to another subject at bath or Bristol, she would need to get on the phone to them too. And they might want to understand why she applied for history but now wanted politics or whatever.

ClearingtheSunStorm · 12/08/2026 18:38

@SheilaFentiman wouldn't the fact she dropped a grade cut it 😂

She is strong in her second subject also etc ? Has proof of a deeper interest

All I’m saying is she should be prepared for the question. No uni wants to take a student who will drop out as they aren’t really doing the subject they wanted.

At 8am she opens ucas. If got firm it’s says congratulations your place is confirmed to study x at Bristol. She’s either got the grades or they have taken with lower grades.
If they haven’t taken her then her insurance might do it will say her place is confirmed to study x at Bath.
If she’s not got a place at either it will say clearing.
Get her actual grades - email or go in school.
Have details of GCSEs, EPQ and anything that may be relevant to hand.
Yes if there is a different course at Bristol that takes her fancy in clearing then she can call and explain why it’s a good fit and hopefully get an offer.
You can check clearing contact numbers for unis she might be interested in and have those to hand.

@Moreholidaysthanjudithchalmers can shs also get offers from both if got the grades

No - if her firm choice takes her then her insurance choice drops away.

ClearingtheSunStorm · 12/08/2026 20:18

Oh that's a shame ! Thanks

It’s the only way the system can work - it means insurance is then free to offer that place in clearing/take someone who firmed but dropped a grade.

If she has genuinely changed her mind in favour of her insurance, then she could ring them and see what they say. If they will accept her, she can renounce her firm offer and take their offer. But she can’t hold both offers.

Moreholidaysthanjudithchalmers · 12/08/2026 21:16

Yes there’s no picking between tomorrow. If she makes her firm that’s it the insurance choice disappears. If she gets her firm but changes mind last minute and actually wants her insurance tomorrow she needs to speak to them asap but no guarantees.

ClearingtheSunStorm · 12/08/2026 21:18

Thank you. And one more question , is there any point in calling either if she's rejected ? Calling to see if they will still take her or will they have thoroughly and totally rejected her ?
Eg bath looked at epq and GCSE grades and said. No even if she's close

The uni has already had her results and weighed up everything and made a decision. Lots will still take them with lower grades it depends on how competitive the course. If they’ve rejected her for that course they’ve rejected her. She could try for another course at the same uni through clearing or same course different uni.

Maybeitllneverhappen · 12/08/2026 21:23

She could try, but they often have done their thinking already. My son had his offer confirmed from Bath before he got his results. He then got his results and saw he had dropped a grade but they had accepted him anyway.

SheilaFentiman · 12/08/2026 21:26

if she is near a grade boundary and going for a re-mark then I would call to understand procedure.

Otherwise they have all the information about her and have decided on a no over a few days, so I don’t think minds would change.

thesandwich · 12/08/2026 21:27

Most important- two or more mobiles and a full list of units numbers available so several people can dial if required- she must do the talking…

Dilemma999 · 12/08/2026 21:29

I think there have been problems with accommodation for insurance students at Bath. Check out the threads on Bath from the last couple of years.

No.the unis got the results a week ago and if they wanted to accept her they would have done so.

If she gets the grades (or they accept her lower) she go to her firm
If she doesn’t get those but enough for her insurance we goes there
If missed both of these then she goes into clearing - which has lots of good options.

Her school will be able to help and staff are ready to do this. Schools got the results today and while we don’t know who has got into unis we know who is vulnerable.

Where do I / she find units list ?

Kepler22B · 12/08/2026 21:40

On the UCAS website https://www.ucas.com/explore/search/courses-beta?query=

if the courses she has got offers from are on there, there is a good chance they will be more flexible with the grades accepted.

SheilaFentiman · 12/08/2026 22:03

@ClearingtheSunStorm I don’t think there’s one central list (though school may have one). But each uni should have the hotline number up somewhere eg

https://www.southampton.ac.uk/clearing

I think the other poster meant unis list not units. Just a typo.

ClearingtheSunStorm · 12/08/2026 22:34

Thank goodness I thought that's an extra layer of complication finding uni numbers as well 😂

How has your DD gotten on? I have my fingers crossed for her.
