First Look at Clearing Availability Before Results Day

Clearing—I’m new to this. As I understood it, universities were posting their clearing courses with spaces today. I can see that Exeter, Liverpool, and Southampton put in lower grade requirements, which is what I thought everyone would do.

York, Leicester, Lancaster, and Birmingham listed the courses with spaces, but the original grades still stand. Will individual students need to enquire on results day what the new minimum requirements are, or will the universities update the minimum grades for everyone to see on results day?

Leeds has no business courses with spaces for domestic students—they are, however, listed as available for international students to apply for. At 3x the tuition fees. Cheeky.

If IB students have arranged for their results to go to UCAS they will be available on Sunday.
I am not sure when UCAS make them available to universities.
There may be some movement after that though.

I think AP results are also out on Monday.

How are all you mums doing who's teenagers are expecting A-level and BTEC results and have applied to UCAS. My son is expecting BTEC results and he seems OK so far. Results are out next Thursday along with the A-level resilts day. He has quite high grades to hit for his chosen Uni course and I am a bundle of nerves but trying to put on a brave face and act unbothered! This is our first time going through the UCAS system so its a bit daunting. In the background I have been researching how clearing works and trying to figure out how results day works. He is only keen on our 2 local universities as he wants to live at home. How's everybody's nerves? Looking for solidarity!

I learnt all about this last year when DD was awaiting results. I think its just all unfair as its so cloak and dagger. Students should be given clear info on what grades are actually accepted. All this apply with 3 Astars for an offer but others can actually get in via clearing on ABC is ridiculous. I prefer the clarity of the Irish CAO system where they tell you the lowest entry marks from the previous year. Its more honest.
But the international side is different. Money is the priority there.

Universities adjust grades they are prepared to accept based on spaces available. This will include applicants with offers who drop grades. If they make all A star offers but loads of candidates drop grades then they are likely to accept a grade to two lower from those they previously made offers to - they won’t drop grades for clearing without first dropping grades for people who hold an offer from them. Sometimes they will know there is sufficient competition for their course and won’t drop grades at all - medicine very rarely if ever drops grades even in clearing. They don’t need to.

The problem with publicising lowest grades offered is these are often contextual offers or may have a very specific set of circumstances around them.

Hi, my DC went through clearing as did not get predicted grades. Called a lot of universities, some did not drop grades by much but others accepted lower grades. Got a great university by the end of the day. It’s not for the faint hearted.
