Laidlaw internship abroad

Any parents of Laidlaw scholars? My DD has been offered an internship in Columbia this summer. She wanted a Latin America country so is pleased and she is trying to get her Spanish up to snuff before she goes. They will be working with local organisations like make_sense working on community projects. Just wondering if any experience? I am a bit concerned about safety as Medellin still has a reputation (it was the featured location for one of the episodes on the current Night Manager series but a rather more upmarket part)!
I think the money they get needs to be used for flights and living expenses - she quite liked that last years internship she could pocket the lot!
Also has being a Laidlaw scholar helped at all in getting a job post graduation?

No experience of internships there (it sounds great) but we had a family holiday in Colombia a couple of years ago and loved it (with 2 teenage girls). We chose to spend some time in Medellin instead of Bogotá because it is actually a much nicer and easier city to get around due to a fab new metro system and cable cars. It is being hailed as an example of regeneration and transformation and we loved our time there. I would imagine it would be an exiting place to do an internship

Obviously there are many parts of the city where she wouldn’t want to go and it would be unwise to be out alone at night but I would say same of many Latin American cities.

Only just seen this, my DC is a Laidlaw scholar and did an internship last summer in Latin America with make-sense (but not Columbia). Had the most amazing time with wonderful local team and international group of scholars. Like all things, how it helps you in the jobs market depends on what you learn from the whole 2 year experience. Feel free to DM me.

Thanks! At the moment just dealing with practicalities. Her uni Laidlaw team booked the flights and she is arriving at midnight. As most flights seemed to be at that time I imagine others will be on the same flight, and her stopover in Miami (worst airport ever in my experience) is several hours. Also she has MS so we need a back up plan if her drug gets spoiled. She’s excited, I’m worried but I’m sure it will be a fascinating adventure!
