DSA laptop insurance

My DS got DSA awarded, it included laptop, software, support and insurance. He bought the laptop elsewhere to get the spec he wanted. And the provider will not insure it or support it as they didn't supply it.

Anyone else used the funds (£111) to buy laptop insurance elsewhere? I can't find insurance for a laptop for four years for £111.

We can get the support and extended warranty from the laptop manufacturer, just not sure about the insurance.

Am confused- we have all the equipment from DSA but insured it ourselves? Insurance for the items wasn’t offered as far as I recall. We just paid an extra £400 to upgrade the laptop, printer, loops etc were all provided by DSA

Insurance was included in our quote from the provider. But as he bought it elsewhere they won't insure it.

Where did you get your insurance from?

We got it from cover4insurance - their student policy. You can google student insurance though and also look at the moneysupermarket website as I think they have recommendations.

Things may have changed as my son is now in 2nd year at University, but for him the insurance costs for the 3 years of his course had to be paid by us initially but was reimbursed by Student Finance after submitting a claim online.

This was the company we used:

For his then almost 2 year old MacBook it was £400+ for accidental damage, theft and breakdown.

I found it was a lot cheaper to add a laptop to a student contents insurance rather than have a standalone policy (as in it was a lot cheaper to buy both than just laptop insurance).

It’s covered by our household insurance, is that the kind of insurance you mean?

No it is student contents insurance (designed for rental accommodation for students) with laptop cover added. I think it cost me £90 for the year. My home insurance wouldn’t cover student laptops as they are not living at home.
