Too early for a Medicine 2027 thread?

Just wondered if there was any interest in a medicine 2027 thread for those of us with YP going into year 12 who plan to apply for medicine? I've seen one or two lurking previously and will try to tag if I can find their user names. Just conscious that I am always posting on the 2026 thread, yet DD is a year behind them and so my comments aren't so relevant.

Please come and join me here if you are interested.

Hi @mumsneedwine, hope the school year has started well.
For Sheffield, did you say that as time went on they offered some interviews to students with a UCAT below the 2120 that is stated on their website? Hope this makes sense, this process has got me in a spin!

is your DC still considering Sheffield @SevilleOranges?

I know. My son has 4 interviews and 3 offers. I’m not sure why they thought that. Maybe it had to do with what they wrote in their PS. Who knows. Good luck everyone. DS is off to his first GP placement this week! Eek.

I hope your DS feels proud of himself when he gets introduced as a student doctor, it is quite the process to get there. I hope he enjoys the course. Is he living in halls?

Thank you so much! It has been quite the process indeed. We started looking at it just post GCSEs… so roughly 2 years!

He’s living in halls but he’s about an hour or so away by train so it’s not too bad. Currently coping with finding and cooking food, and laundry and of course, keeping up with the course. I’ve not really asked him about the course so far - more pre-occupied with him eating, sleeping and keeping clean!

Are you in the process of applying this year? Good luck if so - happy to answer anything if deemed helpful!

Keeping clean made me laugh!
DD applying this year, well that depends on her finishing her personal statement! She is doing anything but that at the moment despite the looming deadline. I keep waking up in the early hours thinking about it and then can’t get back to sleep.
Thank you for the good luck wishes, I do think a bit of luck is involved too.

:) glad I brought some joy! or at least some LOLs!

I think luck is a big part - obviously a big part is the smarts of course, they are all smart cookies. But getting in is also a strategic game and so you apply where your profile fits best, not because you want to be in some sort of top school for whatever or big city or whatever other criteria these young people have these days.

DS did v well for UCAT - for which we were super thankful for. So in a way, that made things easier...but to get those A level grades (there were petitions for both the maths and chem papers, with F maths students saying that their F maths paper was easier than regular maths...) was also not a sure thing. I'm very glad we don't have to go through it again.

Did I see that you were applying to Sheffield? We liked there - it's also mine and DH's alma mater - DS put it down as his insurance.

Hi @ZanyUser still not decided on whether to add Sheffield as a choice.

We liked Sheffield but UCAT was 2110 and this year the lowest for Sheffield was 2120. Prob too risky especially with the increase in scores this year.

ohhhhhhhhhh..... it's never predictable... you could put it as an aspirational? What are your other choices (you've probably said this already sorry!). The deciles will be confirmed soon, so hopefully it'll be clearer...

Liverpool and Leicester so far, need to decide the other 2, maybe we should go all beginning with L!

someone in our group did that... Leeds? :)

Deciles are out

As expected. 40-50 higher than last year. Remember, a lot of those 44,000 are dentists.

Lincoln, Lancaster

SevilleOranges · 30/09/2026 21:53

Lincoln looks quite new, just had a look on the website. Does anyone know any students there or have any opinions on it as a newish med school. Thanks

I don’t know it but it is the same age as ARU, KMMS, Edge Hill, Sunderland and Aston. I believe it was linked to Nottingham before becoming independent in the last year or so.

If you’re thinking of Ls (!), my YP is at Lancaster and loves it. Fab med school - smaller cohort so everyone knows each other, very supportive staff and great facilities.

Hi, I’ve been lurking on this very helpful thread and wanted to ask what are your DC are all putting for their non-medicine fifth choice?

DD is arguing with her school about it. She doesn’t want to put anything - says there’s no point as if she doesn’t get in to medicine this year she’ll take a gap year and do-over so all that putting something down she knows she won’t do is to potentially deprive someone who genuinely wants to do it of a place. School aren’t happy at all.

Any advice? I know the reasoning for it but it seems crazy that the effect is that kids applying to one of the hardest courses to get into end up with one less shot at it than everyone else.

My daughter’s school also said to put something. My daughter is applying for deferred entry and will instantly reject an offer for the 5th choice not taking it away from anyone else.

Sigh of relief from my DD today that there’s just 2 more steps in this long process for prospective medical students!

She submitted her UCAS this morning after checking it a million times, having others check it too & school saying it’s ready to go.

She exceeds the requirements of the university’s she applied to & are her favourites out of all of the open days, based on the uni, the teaching style, the staff & the area.

Liverpool - my home town she loves, has my favourite aunty still there & my favourite uncle works at the Hospital & their children are still there too. My Sister is in North Wales, her favourite cousin is in Chester so lots of support nearby & 4 hours on the train home. The family is a bonus to her on top of her other reasons.

Sheffield - she loved the city, closeness to the Peak District & the bonus is it’s a 2 hours train home.

Southampton - is only 50 minutes train home, we could meet her for lunch, dog walks etc & it’s an easy journey into London/the coast are the bonuses here.

UEA - bonuses are that her favourite uncles live a 25 minute train journey away.

Liverpool & Sheffield are joint number 1 then Southampton & UEA last.

She has applied for deferred entry as she plans to work in a health care environment & travel to volunteer in high poverty areas over a gap year.

She can now concentrate on her A levels with a few interview prep sessions thrown in.

I’m excited & nervous for her!

Anybody else’s DC’s planning on a gap year?
