Newcastle- no accommodation available?

DS going to Newcastle via clearing- no accommodation left on accommodation portal. Anyone in similar situation or been through this previously? Should we be totally panicking?

Not sure how helpful this is because doesn't relate to Newcastle but a friend's DS has secured a place via clearing at Exeter and he has been told by accommodation office that it is very unlikely any uni-owned accommodation will become available and therefore he needs to look at private accommodation. Sorry to hear your DS in this situation - it must be very unsettling. Silly question but have you phoned the accommodation office to check whether what the portal is showing is correct?
Hope things work out for you

Am trying not to crumble into tears- but hoping someone will reply whose child went into private accommodation in first year and loved it- and any suggestions of specific places

Can he be put on a waiting list? Many will drop out in the first term.

Is there nothing at Gateshead Trinity Square either? It’s only over the bridge.

badasscafe1 · 18/08/2025 16:41

He is on wait list but what to do in the interim? Obviously want him to have a traditional uni experience- what a disaster

Can he ask the accommodation officer to put him in touch with other students who have been accepted through clearing? There will be affordable student housing in Newcastle. There's loads of it, near enough to the uni in Jesmond and Heaton and similar areas.

Or he could ask on the Student Room chat if anyone else is going to Newcastle and doesn't yet have accommodation.

Have you Googled? There are dozens of student accommodation websites - just get on to them with his budget and see what's still available. My DS had to find his own place (not in Newcastle) and ended up making relaly good friends with his house mates.

CurlyKoalie · 18/08/2025 16:50

Contact the student union or some private lettings agents in Newcastle. There are usually rooms in shared student houses to let.
Just Google " shared accomodation Newcastle" My son hated Halls in Newcastle and couldnt wait to move into a shared house with his mates.
He recommends the Jesmond area. Pricier but nice.

Look for a Newcastle students accommodation FB group, also Reddit subreddits for Newcastle Uni.

I'm in various fb groups for dd's uni as was helping her look for accommodation and there are still lots of people trying to get their tenancy taken over as they're not returning - either in student house shares or private (non uni) student halls.

I can't give any proper practical advice as I was at Newcastle in the 1980s, but I expect there is loads of private student housing available. The popular areas in my day were (as PP have said) Jesmond and West Jesmond, also Heaton. I expect Brighton Grove area (where I lived for two years) is also popular. maybe Benwell.

Your son won't be the only one looking, hopefully the accommodation office can help put him in touch with others.

Best of luck!

Minnie798 · 18/08/2025 17:00

I would say Jesmond, Heaton area as these are student areas. Have you google searched, I've just quickly searched and uni homes website seems to have accommodation available. Albert street private halls seem quite conveniently located.

bertdynamite · 18/08/2025 17:02

There is so much student accommodation in Newcastle, but maybe not all of it is owned by the uni? Have you looked into this? My daughter went into halls in Glasgow that wasn’t uni owned, and it was great. There’s a big Unite block of accomodation quite central in Newcastle called Quay Point - are there other places like that?

bertdynamite · 18/08/2025 17:05

Just remembered my friend’s son went into accommodation near the Ouseburn, a really studenty area, near The Biscuit Factory, if you can find that on a map. He enjoyed it there.

Ohmygodthepain · 18/08/2025 17:09

Different uni but my DD is going into private halls for years 1 in Manchester - zero uni accommodation available for months before results day. Please stop playing down the full uni experience = not in uni halls!

Dearover · 18/08/2025 17:12

Have you tried all the private halls? They will also be rammed with freshers.

Looking for suggestions for private halls- thanks

DD was in Oxford House? I think it was called. Fairly central from what I can remember (10 yrs ago now) & the staff were lovely back then. 🙂

Maddy70 · 18/08/2025 17:42

It's very common. My daughter didn't get uni accommodation and got her own flat then got someone to share with

alwayshungryhippo · 18/08/2025 17:42

The student roost website is coming up as an advert on here for me. They may have something

Stillmuddlingthrough · 18/08/2025 17:42

Do you mean uni owned accommodation or any halls at all? For example the ones in Ouseburn are a huge contingent of Newcastle and Northumbria freshers - they are private owned but exactly the same vibe as the uni owned ones.

Minecroft · 18/08/2025 17:46

I used to live on a street called Sidney Grove near the city centre. Lovely leafy street. Lots of house shares with students. I can pm you details of the FB group for the street and a really good landlord that owns a lot of the shared houses, lovely lovely chap. I’m sure he’ll help if he has a room x

Dearover · 18/08/2025 18:02

Just Google Private Uni Halls Newcastle, find something within budget and reserve it before everyone else in clearing does the same. They are all going to be full to the rafters with first years.
