Is it hellish? I used to take a lot of work home, can't imagine the job has fundamentally changed so how did you cope?

Good points of returning to work: the flexible year and working day. It's preferable to the usual jobs, as we do have far more free time - think of only having 25 days a year holiday. Taking work home, well yes, you do, but remember you have Broadband and can send emails at 10pm if you want to. I coped by becoming hard-line about my research days and refusing to teach/attend meetings after 5. It depends how many of your colleagues (esp your managers) are OK about your juggling work and kids. There will always be the ones who don't support your commitment to a family life, so you must make sure you know how much to hide from them. My DD has been ill off and on for 2 months but I've made darn sure I keep up with exam marking and admin, and I show my face 4 days a week, even if it's only for an hour.
HTH.
