Loughborough accommodation

DS has conditional offer from Loughborough to start in September. We need to get his halls choices in soon. Can anyone give us a heads up on what halls to lean towards/avoid - not catered, and preferably a more central location, DS is into football predominantly and doing a sports degree. Interested to hear peoples experiences.

@beigeisthenewblack are you on the parents facebook group? There are some photos there of various halls.

Thanks for replying @Eggbert12345 .

@LasVegass I don’t have a Facebook account (or plan to get one), but thanks for replying. Do you know if there is an equivalent student group that DS could join?

LasVegass · 16/08/2026 22:31

@beigeisthenewblack I think they’ll get a link to the official WhatsApp group for each hall. There are various groups just set up by new students, my DC is waiting for the official one.

Thank you. DS has found an official halls Instagram account but says it is very quiet.

@beigeisthenewblack. Lots of DC, like my son don't know which halls they are in yet as they've come via clearing or it's their insurance. So hopefully when that's been sorted the chats will get livelier.

My DD is going to Loughborough to study Psychology. There's a link to the SM groups on the SU website. https://lsu.co.uk/halls/faraday?fbclid=IwVERDUATvl9hwZG9mBWV4dG4DYWVtAjEwAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkDDM1MDY4NTUzMTcyOAABHtNvivdPWhqKOm6Umr970w5CoPFBJs1LkWHgZOQAEJkO4kYm8dXtwUzQd4zZ_aem_ynO3OmNDD55BjuWyc8Qu_g If they click on the hall they are staying in, scroll down to the bottom of the page and there's a group chats link. Somehow she also found other people going to Loughborough on Tiktok? She's been allocated Faraday catered ensuite. Most expensive option of 15 meals per week (3 x 5 meals a day weekdays) which we weren't expecting as we're hoping for self catering ensuite. But apparently the ensuite self catering rooms are the most popular. Not sure if she will get her money's worth as she's quite a fussy eater! As a pp said, The FB page for parents is very good and very active.

Accommodation application submitted this morning. In the end it's quite clear that it's a lottery so keeping fingers crossed that he likes the one that he gets. Though to be honest they all get pretty good feedback - though some definitely look more tired than others.

I think my DS wants the self catered but I am secretly hoping he gets catered as it looks like such a fun way to make friends..

I have no idea how long he has to wait until he finds out - but I'm itching to get bedding sorted etc.

FWIW my DS was offered something pretty unsuitable (£££ but SC and off-campus) – we (he) contacted the accomm office and he was able to go into a pool of people wanting to swap as lots were not happy, so he got the low-cost spot he (we!) needed. All good.

Catered is a good option in many ways I agree but it does cost a lot. I think SC is cheaper or at least enables you to budget whereas catered is a spend of £8.5k-£10k+ upfront. But if that's in your budget then all good.

My DS got Hazelrigg Rutland SC ensuite yesterday which he is very happy with as he was an insurance place and we'd been told v unlikely that any SC ensuites were left. Any hints or tips welcome. How long would the walk to the Business School be from there does anyone know? Anything in particular he needs for the room?

The info on the Lboro website will tell you about the room (size of bed for example - some halls are standard single and some three-quarter which needs double duvet) and there is also a campus map.

The hall is on the edge of the main student village so pretty near all facilities like the Union and the sports facilities. I don't know where the business school is but tbh if you are on campus most things are within a 10-15 min walk.

@allthemind amazing that you've found out. I thought that hall looked great. Ds is waiting. Did you apply yesterday?

DS has been allocated Cayley. Which I'm pleased about as considering it's catered it's pretty reasonable.
He is less enthusiastic as it's a standard room. But I think he will get over that - and it's general nerves about the whole thing kicking in.

allthemind · 19/08/2026 19:56

Glad its come through, I'm impressed how quickly they've done it. We checked about 10pm last night and it was there. Cayley is meant to be one of the really sociable lively ones and very central so I'm sure he'll have a great time. Tbh all the accomodation options seem to be great at Lougborough and way better than the hideous hall my elder child got at University X as first choice! I think they're really lucky to have even got on campus at insurance/clearing time. If he really wants en suite etc I feel like there is a bit of movement in the first few weeks and he might be able to switch.

AuntyBulgaria · 19/08/2026 20:04

@allthemind which course is your DS doing? Mine is doing maths with economics.

Re ensuite I am quite happy that he didn't get it - as it saves me some money! Though it would have been nice to get the newer block. But when I think back to the halls I had - goodness he won't know how good he has it!

allthemind · 19/08/2026 20:14

He's doing Accounting & Finance. Now I only have to worry whether they'll be any non AI replaced jobs left when he finishes 😆. For now I just want them to have fun for 3/4 years and enjoy their independence. His elder sibling had quite a few friends who went to Loughborough and without exception all had nothing but positive things to say so hopefully it will all work out for the best!

Its nerve-wracking as parents isnt it 😄(and I still have younger siblings to potentially go 😫)
