Hello all,
we are trying to choose which one to firm between Southampton and Sheffield for Meng Mechanical Engineer, looking at the social side of things. Currently leaving in London but from overseas, don't really know either bar open day visits.
thank you for your help.

Sheffield is well known for fun! High student satisfaction. DH did Engineering there and loved the city.

Coming on to say Sheffield too.
ex bf went there and it was a lot of socialising.

Sheffield

Sheffield, especially if interested in outdoorsy activities (the climbing and caving clubs are legendary). MechEng are notorious for a work hard/play hard attitude pretty much everywhere so if he is up for that he will have a lot of fun.

If your DC likes the beachlife, sailing, watersports etc and decent weather, then Southampton. Presumably if you are living in London, you can deal with the higher costs down South. You should also consider which one can offer more industry opportunities, not just pick on the basis of the social side.

Not sure anyone I’ve met who went to Southampton was there for the beaches and most didn’t have the money to sail. Both universities are great for engineering and a job really should not be a problem for a grad with a decent cv. I would suggest holiday work though. Southampton isn’t London prices.
