Scottish offers for English students

Oh the waiting is soooo hard Sad

DD has 2 offers from English unis, but is still waiting on 3 Scottish unis, which are definitely her preferred options. Has anyone had any offers, or do they offer Scottish students first?

Congratulations on your kid having offers in hand. I don't know if they offer to Scottish students first, but my kid got an offer for History in October after he applied in Sept. A friend's DD applied at the same time for a STEM course and waited a lot longer, til January before hearing back.

I’ve been told it’s because the big Scottish unis are just so popular, they have so many applications to plough through.

Highlandhardrain · 19/02/2025 18:29

I don't think it's because they offer to Scottish students first. Two years ago, my (Scottish) dc waited until March for an offer from St Andrews - I gather this is quite usual and Edinburgh sometimes offer even later.

The Scottish places are capped and the places for students from the rest of the UK are from a different batch of places iykwim. It's due to the way the funding works, so they are not directly competing.
The popular Scottish unis take ages to give out places, they are often amongst the last. Late March/ early April not unusual at least that was the case a few years ago for DS2 and 3 ( Scottish).

Agree with @Highlandhardrain Edinburgh and St Andrews particularly bad.

Highlandhardrain · 19/02/2025 18:37

Yes just to add, my dc got an offer from St Andrews about 3 days before the offer holders open day. So It might be worth noting these dates just in case - we cancelled plans to go to it.

My dd received her offers from Strathclyde in late February 2 years ago. They were overwhelmed with applications I believe.

I think it must depend on the University and the course. My DS is English and currently at a Scottish University and he got his offer in less than a week last year yet a schoolmate applying for a different cours at the same institution had a long wait. I suspect there's no real pattern and it's probably best not to dwell on it.

We're waiting for an Edinburgh offer. DD didn't go to an open day so we're desperately hoping that, if she gets an offer, it arrives before the offer holders' day so she can attend.

Juja · 20/02/2025 19:01

Good luck - all this waiting is wearing isn't it @PartoftheBand

My DC1 got an offer for Edinburgh in January in 2020. DC2 in 2022 (for a different subject) gave up waiting in early May and firmed and insured two other offers. Their friend for the same subject hung on another week heard in mid May. All pretty stressful if it is the offer you really want.

Holding in there is really all you and DD can do....
