Theology Undergrad

DD is looking at Theology/Divinity/Religion courses. We have some experience as I have a BD (albeit from 25 years ago) and DS looked at similar degrees a few years ago. The difference is that DS’s focus was on joint honours Theology and Philosphy, whereas DD wants straight Theology/Religion.

Her shortlist at present is Nottingham, Leeds, Durham, Manchester, Birmingham, Exeter & Bristol. (Not in any particular order) We looked at Durham, Manchester & Birmingham with DS but have no experience of the others.

Scottish unis are out for a number of (very valid) reasons but anything else is up for discussion. She is likely to get straight As or a mix of A/Astar in 3/4 A levels depending on whether she drops to 3 after AS this year or sticks with 4.

Any recommendations/insights/places to avoid?

Has she looked at Oxford?

Yes - discounted both Oxford and Cambridge due to not wanting that style of university experience (tutor led, short terms, gown culture etc) and the requirement for either Greek or Hebrew. I understand her reticence on the languages from my own experience 25 years ago, and she wants to go into RS teaching and/or youth work after so there really won’t be a need for deep language study. (Her school are not thrilled at her discounting Oxbridge but I think it’s the right decision for her)

Dd is in her third year at Nottingham doing Psychology, but she has a friend doing Theology who's really enjoyed it. Dd has also chosen to do a Theology module this semester (it's the first time they've been able to choose a module from outside Psychology). She's been very impressed by how responsive and helpful the lecturer has been, particularly compared to her experience of Psychology lecturers/tutors! Nottingham is a lovely campus and a lively city and dd has enjoyed her time there.

That’s really good to hear. Thank you. It’s a university that’s never been on our radar before so know absolutely nothing about it

One of DC's peers studied at SOAS which I imagine would be quite different. Judging from the work she went on to do, it seems to be well regarded.

DD did History at Exeter, which is very flexible and offered some Theology modules. The dept is one of the best in the country, were very, very good, very interesting, and had some excellent tutors. Her dissertation was heavily Theology focused. She has gone on to do a Masters, and is still very focused on Religious history due to her time at Exeter.
