Advice for 1st experience of an assessment centre for placement job?

Son has been invited to assessment centre for 3rd year placement (business student for large corporate). I remember doing a few back in the day and wonder whether its generally the same set up - various group exercises / interviews etc? He's doing lots of preparation about the industry / company / what he has to offer.

If anyone has any tips - how to manage the nerves / stand out etc, that would be very welcome.

For finance/ business
The AC usually consist of

  1. competency
  2. case study
  3. technical

Usually some sort of group exercise

The usual questions about how to approach difficult situations, your area of interest and why you want to work for the particular organisation
Is there anything the organisation has been involved in that has sparked his interest? What is his view on this?
Has he undertaken any business mentoring roles at his university

Group work- ensure that he contributes but does not dominate .

Needs to come across as confident in his abilities .

Good advice from @Lampzade

Further points: the ability to speak clearly and cogently about technical points is a big plus. In the group setting, graciously acknowledging others, helping to make sure everyone is heard, etc - subtly taking a constructive lead, but only if it can be done naturally - is good.

Best wishes to DS

Many thanks both. I think its quite daunting but hopefully he'll be confident. Shame its such a great opportunity as his first assessment centre, he could have done with having done one already so he understands the process.

@Africa2go how did he get on? Hopefully not too overwhelming!

My son is doing the same and undertook his first assessment centre last month - German car manufacturer for a finance role. Unfortunately, he didn't get offered a position, but it was a good experience for him.

From what he told me, he probably let himself down in the interview stage - he told me a couple of questions and how he answered them - in my opinion, with 30+ years on the corporate treadmill, he was probably a little too honest.

I've recommended he go and ask for some interview practice at his university careers service - something to think about for your DS too, if he hasn't already done so.

Also, if it's a large corporate it's likely previous students at his university may have been through the process and fed back to the careers service what the assessment days entail. Also have a look on Glassdoor and The Student Room for any mentions.
