Laptop spec for civil engineering?

If your DC is doing Civil Engineering MEng, have they been given a minimum laptop spec?

My DC is applying for next year (to Imperial, UCL, Bristol, Bath, Southampton) but needs a new laptop now, so we want to get one that will be suitable for the course. I've been unable to find info online so far.

The requirements were on the Civil Engineering page for the Uni he attends.

If your DS is applying for DSA you can get an appropriate one through them.

Yes, check with the department as they might need a certain spec for memory etc. Ds has just bought one for IC as he's leaving his PC at home. It's an Asis Tuf coca £620 but he games too. H's not doing engineering though. Your dc may need one with additional features for design perhaps?

General advice is to stick to Windows for engineering but a good proportion of students seem to make Apple work for them just fine.

Check minimum requirements for AutoCAD LT or other CAD software if it is possible DC will use that. May need or at least advise a separate graphics card. Would suggest double the RAM and storage of the above specs. A gaming laptop may work well.

For reference, I run Fusion 360 perfectly well on an eight year old Surface Pro.

There is no need to go mad!

This is what Sheffield recommend for their Civil and Structural Engineering courses. @hamNchutneyI expect you just need to look for the info.

Which one of those 5 is the insurance choice?
