Question for those whose dc have done a masters degree

Dd has just started hers, she has (slightly belatedly) realised that whilst her tenancy will finish in June, her Masters doesn’t finish until September. What have other people’s dc done to cover this gap? She doesn’t want to commit to another year of tenancy as it’s likely that her housemates will be going their separate ways (for a variety of reasons) after this year. Thanks.

She can look for a house share room
Spare room.co.uk or ask on local boards like next door

She'd only be doing her dissertation at that point so it may well be possible to come home, accessing papers online (or using a local uni library), and having supervision via Teams.

On the other hand if she's got lab work to do, then a mix of distance commuting, travelodge, sofa surfing, air bnb, short term lodgings, halls can sometimes offer summer lets.

Teaching will almost certainly have stopped

It'll be the dissertation - although some places want it handed in by August.

Many many years ago when I did my masters I was able to get a room on campus in halls for those last few summer months when the lease of my private house share had ended.

Theunamedcat · 23/09/2024 22:56

Dd stayed they had "masters halls" and the contract went up to the September

My DS did an internship for 3 months last summer and he sublet a room in private halls from a guy who was there for 2 years but away in the summer. Worked well. Got it off student room I think.

SandyIrving · 24/09/2024 09:28

One of mine sublet over the summer from undergraduate students who were continuing. Wasn't great as they had all sublet to randomers who were pretty lousy flatmates. However my DC was out most of the day so bearable.

RNJ35 · 24/09/2024 10:15

We are going to have the same issue with DS in June. I have looked and it looks like there are private halls in his city available for the summer period which I'm hoping we can book into.

Delphigirl · 24/09/2024 12:25

@RNJ35 i found that the summer lets through private halls themselves generally started in July, which didn’t work for DS as he needed somewhere at the beginning of June. Hence the private sublet.

Thanks so much for all the replies, will get dd to look into the halls situation.
