There is a supposed error on my student finance account of which there is no timescale to fix. They have been extremely unhelpful. I have started University already and I have no money. My universal credit stopped as they are waiting for my student loan breakdown of which I cannot provide due to the system error at student finance. I am a single mother with 2 children. I don't know what to do anymore. At a total loss and student finance will not tell me when it is going to be fixed. Theres literally no time frame.

I'd keep on phoning them. And consider involving your local mp given the impact it's having on your UC.

Hope it's sorted soon.

I’m sorry you’re going through this OP.

Firstly, you should have received a letter months ago with a breakdown of what you would be getting from student finance. Thats all UC need to see, I had to leave a message in my journal asking how to upload the letter and they sent me a link same day. I then got confirmation of the changes and UC continued to be paid.

Do you have anyone at all you could borrow some money from until your student loan comes through? Have you spoken to student support at your university?

Octavia64 · 20/09/2024 09:10

Your university will have a student hardship fund.

Talk to your tutor they will help you access support from your university.

UniWombat · 20/09/2024 09:12

Hi OP your Uni should have a student money service who understand student finance, and as a PP has said, a hardship fund. Academic members of staff don't always know about these things so please contact the reception, helpdesk, helpzone or whatever it's called at your Uni. They should refer you urgently.

Agree with speaking to the university tutor or student welfare as a short term fix.
They will have a student hardship fund you can apply to

SeptemberStarter · 20/09/2024 09:13

(Edit: Everyone else replied while I was typing!) Your university will probably have a hardship fund for this kind of problem (the one I worked for did). Talk to your tutor/course leader ASAP and gather your evidence (Student Finance correspondence and bank statements.) The application forms might be on your HE course page online. I hope you get some help soon!

Lilyblooms · 20/09/2024 09:31

Thank you.

I don't have the award letter as it is still processing. Its a system error they said. I will try and look at the hardship fund.

Hi, OP -

I am also very sorry this has happened to you. I agree with everyone else that you have a clear case for the Student Hardship Fund. I am only writing to say that sadly many personal tutors may not know about this. However in many universities each School will have a Student Support Officer, possibly by a different name, who should be able to help. As should the Student Union

BESTAUNTB · 21/09/2024 08:58

Email your local MP today with a complaint. Their office will next week email the Student Finance Complaints team who will then prioritise your case.

Meanwhile consider getting a 0% credit card for expenses (M&S Money offers one) and ensure to pay it off when the finance arrives.

Hope it's sorted now @Lilyblooms
