Hi Mumsneedwine, please could you share your views on what do you think about this and how situation could be improved? My son missed UCL medicine offer, remark didn’t helped. He is going to BSMS insurance. He so much wanted to go to UCL and London. We don’t have much knowledge if there is any possibility of transferring to any London Medical School during after intercalation ? Please help.
Many Thanks

DD intercalated from Bristol to Imperial. (She applied to UCL, KCL and IC.)

Obviously studying for six years rather than five has a cost (two years on the miserly NHS bursary), medical schools often have restrictions on who can intercalate, and some courses are competitive to get onto. Intercalations are stand alone (DD's was in the engineering department and she studied alongside third year and Masters engineering students) so you return to your original medical school.

DD loved her course, and enjoyed the switch to something more academic., It has widened her career options should she decide (or the NHS with its lack of career path for junior doctors, decide for her) to leave medicine. It also gives substance to her CV.

Details of courses can be found at

One tip is to go to open days a year early. Ie if you intercalate after your third year, attend open days in your second. There is a very tight gap between open days and the application deadline.

@Mumr

He has a place on an excellent course, though.

There's every chance he will be really happy and a great success at Brighton and Sussex.

To get a place to study medicine is a wonderful achievement.

As I said on other thread, be happy he's off to study medicine. No transfers are possible.

TBH with Medicine it doesn't really matter where you study as at the end every one is a doctor.

I don't think I've ever met a doctor who didn't think their med school was the best.

Most people end up working, at least for a bit, near where they qualify. It's not a big topic of conversation.
