Taking a gap year after uni - implications for grad recruitment?

DS will start the third and final year of his BSc in September. This summer he is doing a summer internship with a financial consultancy company, and there's a good chance he may be offered a job for when he graduates. I asked him whether that's what he wants and he said yes, he'd like to work for them as a graduate, but also wants to think about taking a gap year after his finals to travel. If he did this, might it negatively impact his graduate job prospects? Is it ever the done thing to ask for a graduate job offer to be deferred for a year?

Lots of DS's friends took a travel gap year after uni and are now working well paying jobs. Don't worry

@trubblesum what subject does Ur DS study?

One of my DS's friends did defer his graduate job offer and then spent a year traveling.

He does statistics, and wants to be an actuary. It will require a few years of on-the-job learning and exams, so he thinks he may not get much opportunity to travel once he starts.

Normally I’d say it was fine (I see lots of grad recruitment!).

But I would talk to someone who knows about actuaries in particular - it’s a very specialist world, and they’ll want their maths to be sharp.

It might still be fine, but don’t rely on people saying it’s ok because PwC / the civil service / whoever do it.

Could he take a gap year now?

LSEMum · 14/07/2024 20:23

Asked DS and his actuary friends said it was fine

If he gets a job, take it. Bird in the hand. They might defer his start. Ask. If not, there are holidays!
