Newcastle Open Day Parking?

Aiming to arrive early for the open day but wondering if city centre parking will be ok?

University website mentions park and ride - would that be better?

The uni is right in the city centre, so no issue distance wise but parking is sparse and expensive and roads get busy. Very busy.

What park and ride is being suggested? Newcastle has no official park and ride schemes so I assume that is either being provided by the University or they're suggesting the Metro, which is a bit crap, at the moment.

Assuming you're coming from the south I'd aim for Heworth Park and ride. The Haymarket metro stop is likely to be close to where you need to get to.

Metro is generally a bit rubbish, delays etc, but driving/buses seem to be even worse options at the moment. Newcastle isn't well designed for the amount of traffic it has (that pesky river in the way).

Tyne Bridge has major roadworks so all the other routes in are very busy. The cheaper parking (on the Quayside) is a fair walk from the uni.

Thank you both for the advice - metro it is - @DuneFan Heworth Park and ride is in Gateshead - is that right?

Yes Gateshead is the South side of the river and Newcastle North. Heworth is Gateshead.

You can park in Portland Terrace (pulled up on the pavement outside the closed offices or in the back lane, Hutton Terrace). It's then a 10 minute walk to the uni via the civic centre.

We've nearly always parked at Grainger Town car park and always got a space. Only once on match day was it maxed out, and there are a couple more car parks close by. Eldon Square I've found a nightmare

Thank you to everyone who responded- I followed @DuneFan‘s advice and all went smoothly!
