The student finance people are demanding MY customer reference number to support my daughters application - I took out one loan on paper in 1992

I of course have no idea what it is. It says it doesn’t matter how long ago it was and to use the customer number I was given even if it was completed ‘on paper’ (it was) The website says NO when I give it my ID details and tells me to call a 0300 number at 16p per minute and tells me the wait is at least 45 minutes. I’m not even in the UK this month so it will be astronomical. HELP! This can’t be normal - what am I missing? Other than ancient documents? I can’t see any other way. My husband is going to have the same problem.

But surely, if you can’t create a second account, because it knows it’s a second account, because it links to a NI number, we should just give our NI number?

Yep, totally agree. It’s a ridiculous system. It knew who I was and that I had a student loan from my NI number. I answered all the security questions correctly AND had my student finance number. Was able to get into my own account ok. However it wouldn’t let me link to her account because my loan was still in my maiden name. They’re quite happy for me to pay it off with a different surname however!
Had to send loads of supporting documents and it still wouldn’t let me change my surname on the system. In the end I had to fill out the paper form and send it off. To which my daughter got a reply saying the form needed to be uploaded online. So tried to upload it to my account (as I was the one who had needed to fill the form in) and they said no, needs to be uploaded to your daughter’s account as we can’t link your account to hers.

@Ombadcat i’m absolutely exhausted just reading that. It’s beyond a joke really.

For those saying it’s to grab money - it’s not always… DH was pleasantly surprised to be contacted by SLC once he had recovered his account only to find out they had been trying to contact him for years as he had overpaid his loan and they owed him money (which had accrued interest!). It was a very nice surprise!

I'm still stuck on this! I printed out the forms and sent them off registered post 14th May.....heard nothing since!? What next. Son's loan account says they are still waiting for my response!
Arghhhh

Wowwellokthen · 06/06/2024 18:24

I go round in circles on the 0300 number as they keep asking for a customer reference number before I speak to a human....which I don't know!

I posted my firms initially then rang to chase up. They said to upload the forms online. Initially did it to my account but it turned out they had to be uploaded to my daughter’s account

Wowwellokthen · 06/06/2024 18:46

I've sent the forms! I'll have to do them again and upload to son's account. How would you upload to your own account if you can't get onto your account Sad

Ah I could get onto my own account but couldn’t link to support dds claim as my surname was different from the one on file. Good luck

Wowwellokthen · 06/06/2024 20:12

Thanks - I've uploaded the forms to son's account now....hopefully this will get things moving otherwise I think he gets tuition loan only and I have to find £7500 for accommodation somehow!

I did phone them in the end and they were surprising helpful and were able to give me my application number from 1994-1997 - records were on the system - paid thankfully some years ago. I've probably got the paperwork somewhere but it's not exactly at the top of my drawer after nearly 30 years Grin

Resurrecting this thread to see how people got on/are getting on with their applications.

I ask because SFE continue to unimpress me - now they have somehow concluded my NI details are wrong and HMRC has no record of me (untrue and untrue) so I have to jump through further hoops. I'm wondering if this is some kind of vendetta because I got arsey with them on facebook last year. Though more likely sheer incompetence.

listsandbudgets · 15/07/2024 14:40

@Wowwellokthen If nothing else, he should get tuition fees and the minimum maintenance loan of about £4k which is better than nothing
