Student finance deadline

DS is hoping to start uni this year and is about to apply for student finance. I thought the deadline for applications was in June (after Googling it) but having just watched an item on TV about issues with the application process, it seems the deadline is 17th May!

I keep nagging DS to speak to someone at college about it but he's dragging his feet.

Does anyone know the deadline for certain?

That's the deadline to guarantee receipt of the money at the start of term, when the student enrols.
In reality, they can apply after that and still receive it at the correct time, although it might be a bit late.
Technically they can apply up to 9 months after starting the course.
Why does he need to speak to college - just apply via gov.uk

Thank you.

I want him to take some ownership of the process, hence making the effort to find things out at college. The whole uni application process has been painful so far. He has only just had all his offers back and he still hasn't made his firm choice. He is good at resting on his laurels whilst we nag him!

It's the 17th May NEXT year! Don't worry!

Not if he wants his money in September this year!

He can apply even if he hasn't firmed anywhere. Just put in his current favourite - it can be easily later on.

Thanks all. We've had a good discussion and he has a free morning on Friday, so he will get on with it (plus accommodation applications) then.

He is unlikely to be able to apply for accommodation if he hasn't made his firm choice yet.

His college has nothing to do with it. He needs to do it and there's guidance online about the application. You might want to help to make sure he fills it out properly- if looking further higher than maintenance so needs to put in your details that he includes your name in the correct way (issues with middle names seems to be a common problem), that he's applying for maintenance and tuition, home status, etc (though he can change that later if he hasn't firmed).
He needs to have a bank account in his name.

We applied on Tues night and had confirmation of loan details etc this morning. Am impressed with the speed of it. Included having to upload extra info also.

You can check on the gov.uk website re how much maintenance loan your DS will be entitled to; if he is only going to be eligible for the minimum (the portion which is not means tested), then there is no need for him to give your contact details for you to go through the assessment process only for him to be told that he will only get the minimum anyway.
