Anyone have a child at UEA or know the uni? I have a question about accommodation

My child is going to accept an offer at UEA. We have visited on the open day and the applicant day but on neither day was the accommodation with shared bathroom available to visit.

Is anyone familiar with it? The accommodation is quite a bit cheaper and my child is hesitant as they haven't actually seen it.

I'd be very grateful for any info

Hello @0ranges my son is currently studying at UEA in his 3rd year as an international student in South Korea. He did his first year in digs on campus at UEA with accommodation with a shared bathroom. It was basic but I wouldn't say it was minging and the advantage of a shared bathroom is that the accommodation had cleaners for communal areas like the bathrooms and the kitchen.

You're right it was a lot cheaper and he definitely didn't want to spend more on accommodation. He was happy. His room wasn't huge but it was definitely adequate with a bed, desk, bookshelf, wardrobe and chest of drawers.

Good luck with it all. They'll have a great time (and of course study lots!).

Oh thank you for your reply!

That's good to hear, do you happen to know if the kitchens in those halls have ovens!?

Yes, they do as I recall having to buy oven baking dishes!

@0ranges DS just finishing his masters at UEA (undergrad there as well). So first thing to say....it's great!

However if you are referring to the ZIGGs they are closed due to the RAIC issue, not yet certain if they will be re-opening in time for this autumn's intake or not.

Thank you, yes they said the ZIGGS were closed. There are about 100 rooms with shared bathroom on campus still.

I've only heard very positive things about the actual uni!

ZIGGs should be back by the next academic year apparently. I think work is about to commence to fix the issue.

I was in Suffolk Terrace for a term back in 2005 just before they were refurbished (Norfolk had been done the year before) and the shared bathrooms then were basic but perfectly liveable. A friend was in one of the shared "flats" (2 beds, with shared bathroom and kitchenette), which were nicer but didn't have the same community feel imo. My info is pretty out of date now, but the UEA accommodation was always being upgraded whilst I was there and always nice enough (especially compared with some of the rental houses i saw in my latter years!)
