I Hope you can help me. My dd has asked me to be a guarantor for her new place she is going to get in 3rd year in Bristol but we have been declined because we are private tenants. My father in law can’t help as he is too old. What can we do ? I don’t want her to lose her place because of us :(

It's not just universities though. I think it's really awful that parents are having to guarantee their adult children's accommodation.

I've had children in uni since 2018 and the guarantor situation has got a lot harder recently. I was turned down twice for the most recent year and eventually phoned them up to find out what I could do and they were very helpful, all sorted now thank goodness although I am very much looking to graduation this summer and not having to worry about it for a while again.

This caused us so much stress and tears. Had to use Goodlord who are useless and inflexible- v difficult to speak to anyone. DH employment set up is not standard and Goodlord just couldn't process it and made no attempt to understand etc. SIL thankfully stepped in and saved the day. She too was treated badly by Goodlord though. Whole process was extremely stressful

@FictionalCharacter But if her tenancy is joint and severally liable her share is the whole as her share is the joint liability. There needs be very specific wording to limit it entirely than actual fixed amount. They often catch parents who don't take legal advice out in this way.

We are going up gather the money so we can pay the whole year upfront
