Is your DD going to Russian language school in Tallinn? If so the language school should be able to help, or she can find something temporary on Booking.com or AirBnB until she knows the lay of the land and meets people to live with. Or she could arrange a homestay and live with a local family.

Students in the year above at your DD's uni should be able to help.

DS went to Bishkek (which is MUCH better for Russian students as the locals all speak Russian!!) and lived in language school accommodation for a month before switching to a home stay. However few of the girls felt comfortable going down the homestay route so stayed in the student accommodation.

Hi Midlife - did your DS attend Lingua Yurt by any chance? This is on my DC’s radar as an option (not keen on Baltic option) so any feedback gratefully received!

Hi @Rzim dd1 spent August-May last year in Tallinn at a Russian language school as part of her year abroad. Homestay accommodation was arranged through the Russian language school (RLUS) although a few students ended up swapping homestays or moving into short-term apartment rentals during the year. Does your dd have to find her own accommodation? Has she already approached the Year Abroad office at her university for help?

She went to tallin last summer and stayed in the hostel associated with the Uni, had such a good time
Decided to go back there for her year abroad - she "says" her uni won't provide much help! Sure we can find air bnb studios etc just wondered if there was a shortcut! X

I think he said there were students there from Cambridge, Durham and Edinburgh..... oh and Melbourne!

If you want to get a feeling for the beauty of Kyrgyzstan, take a look at Alexandratolstoytravel on Instagram. It is the most stunning country full of fabulous people.

Following this thread as dd will be looking at options this time next year for her Russian part of the year abroad.

Outnumberedbytwo · 25/01/2024 16:48

Does your dd have a choice about where she spends the 'Russian' part of her year abroad, @loobylou44 ? If so, Tallinn might not be the best option in terms of immersion in the language. My dd spent part of her year abroad there last year and had a great time, but it probably wasn't the best option in terms of language as most Estonians do not speak Russian in shops, cafes etc. (except in the Russian quarter) and many of the homestay families spoke Estonian, English or German rather than Russian. She attended a language course which was organised by her university so had no choice, but is looking at spending some time in Kazakhstan in the summer in order to improve her spoken language skills. She also spent some time in Georgia. Having said that, Tallinn is a wonderful city and she had a fabulous experience there.

@Outnumberedbytwo I think she gets to choose the country but not sure about the city. She's vegan so has been told Estonia would be a better choice than Kazakhstan.

@Rzim do you have any details for the language school please. DD would like to do a course there this summer if possible as she's just finished year 1 of Russian at university.

Called Tallin Summer School, in Tallin. My daughter had also just down her first year at UCL reading Russian and really enjoyed it and found it very useful

@Rzim thank you. Did she stay with a family or in accommodation provided by the language school? Were there many people from the UK there at the same time?

Rzim · 12/06/2024 17:06

She stayed in the hostel attached to the language school which worked well I think. Her room mate was a bit of a party animal which was a pain but apart from that it worked well! Not sure about how many other English students
