Possibly failed 3rd Year (Scottish BSc(Hons) but hate subject and want to change anyway

My son hates his degree pathway (biosciences). As a result, he's struggled with motivation in 3rd year. I wish he had said earlier, but now he wants to do a completely different degree at a different institute—no problem with this. He understands he'll have to start from the very beginning and fund the entire 4 years himself, as he's had 3 years of SAAS funding (Scottish). My question is, does anyone know what his options might be if:

  1. He fails his 3rd year (he's 100% not continuing) - can he still get a DipHE?
  2. He passes 3rd year; can he get funding in the 4th year of a totally different subject?

He's trying to work out whether graduating with an Ordinary Degree is the best option, dropping out now (because he may have failed his exams thus far and likely would repeat the year if he was to stay on anyway) or continuing until end of 3rd year. Dropping out now is not an option as far as I'm concerned unless it has an effect on funding for the new degree he wants to pursue. Appologies for asking on here - I've been trying SAAS all week and run out of time before I get through!

He should be able to access 2 further years of funding so would only pay fees for last 2 years of new degree. There might be bursaries available at some unis for switchers to help out.

Speak to current uni about options. One of mine left masters around this time. Pleasantly surprised that they only charged him a terms fees plus he got a PCE.

DD knows someone who chose wrong course in 3rd year. Completed the year successfully - cashed in with an Ordinary Degree and is doing OU modules this year and next to upgrade to a Honours degree in her new subject (she has some overlap so 2 years of her old course counted towards new one). DDs friend said she actually did better in 2nd term of old course as she had a route out.

If there is little overlap he might be better jumping now and earning some money before restarting in September.

Is he definitely sure subject not for him?
