Considering UEA??

My Ds is holding an offer for University of East Anglia to study Computer Science commencing Sept 2024. We attended the open day earlier this year and we were all really impressed with the Department staff and course content and whilst my son is predicted higher grades than required, this is currently his preferred choice. I do have some concerns though due to their financial state - a current advertise deficit of £30m, rising to £45m in the next 3 years, plus the addition of RAC in thier most iconic accommodation building. Is anyone’s Ds or Dd also considering UEA and should I be concerned? I understand the reason why they have this deficit but not sure how this may impact on the quality of facilities or teaching he may receive- he is looking to study a 4 year course.
Thanks

So dd is on for CS at UEA! Anyone else?

jld45 · 16/08/2024 06:15

Yes - ds is in - taking CS with year in industry Had his room allocation as well and got his first choice 😁 Have found out that at at least one other person he knows is also in for CS, and two other friends are going to UEA, different courses though. It sounds like UEA was a popular choice with his college.

Oh brilliant! We haven't heard about accommodation yet. When did you hear?

SockFluffInTheBath · 16/08/2024 06:58

DS is heading for UEA, not CS, heard last night he got his 2nd choice for accommodation. It’s starting to feel very real!

@jld45 @T0PHAT @Itstoday @SockFluffInTheBath

Congrats!! My DD has loved it there-Undergrad, Masters and has stayed on to live.
It's a great student experience-hope your DC will be very happy!

My DS literally got an e-mail from UEA within 30 mins of UCAS update, confirming his place, then received further e-mail at about 10ish with his room offer/details and accommodation agreement to sign. Two of his friends also received theirs yesterday. My DS and one friend are in the village, different buildings, and other one is on main campus- all 3 given their first choice. Not sure how its allocated - all three met conditions of offer so was a pretty easy process. Have been advised of moving in date too.

@jld45 similar to you my DS met conditions and accommodation has been offered. Will get him to accept it today (if he’s not too hungover). I’m very excited for him - I think UEA will suit him. They are very efficient!

Just in case anyone is wondering, after scrolling the internet for videos of village accommodation and finding some with older looking type rooms, I can confirm that 99% of village rooms have been refurbished and are as per the website 360 tour 😁 I was just a little concerned - they don’t allocate the un refurbished rooms unless they need to (about 4 of them left to do, and usually to 2nd yr’s who want to stay in uni accommodation) - phew - Ds wasn’t concerned at all, just me being overly protective and needing to know what my child would be living in! I must say I am impressed with the communication so far!

My DD has just finished a year in The Village and loved it. She is very happy at UEA. I must say it always seems very friendly and welcoming whenever I'm there. Any questions, please ask and I can try and help 😁

Finally found out about accommodation and we have got one that is twice the price of her first choice! Honestly, how can we afford this??

SockFluffInTheBath · 16/08/2024 21:03

@T0PHAT is that Blickling? DS is in there too and I was a bit breathless at the cost. If you get in touch with them they should be able to offer something else. There are so many courses still in clearing they must have empty rooms.

SockFluffInTheBath · 16/08/2024 21:36

Not Blickling, knew it didn’t sound right. Barton Hickling Crome.

Dd has just done her first year at UEA.

It was her insurance choice and hand on heart its been the best thing that has happened for her.

Lovely safe, green campus, accommodation has been great, made lots of friends and is raring to get back in Sept.

Norwich is a lovely little town.

Hope your DC love it as much as my daughter does.
