Car insurance for the holidays?

DS is back for Christina's and has been looking at temporary Car insurance in my car for 4 weeks.

Does anyone else's DC do this and can you recommend a company?

Try your own insurance company first!

I tried to add 20 year old ds (passed at 18 I guess) to my insurance for a few weeks and had to take out a whole new policy with all the extra fees involved. Which was about £500 more pcm. Then when I wanted to take him off I had to start another new policy again with all that involved! How old is your ds? May not be worth it!

Could be difficult since he has no insurable interest in the vehicle. Your underwriter could maybe allow him to be a temporary additional driver.
How much driving would he need to do?

He's 19. He had insurance for a year on my car before with Marmalade Wink

Veygo let you insure by the day. When DD was learning we could add her for about £6 for 2 hours so she could practise. Once she passed we could add her for the odd day for about £8-12.

Is he a learner or has he passed? It’s cheaper when they’re a learner!

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 17/12/2023 15:15

He's passed so yes, it's much dearer!

I’ve added my uni student back on for Christmas (4 weeks) was just under £40 with Churchill who I’m insured with on the same car

ramonaquimby · 17/12/2023 15:18

As a temporary driver, they’ve had a license for under 12 months

That's because they are accompanied by an experienced driver when they're learning.

Marmalade do ‘pay as you go’ ie you can buy them eg 500 miles which lasts a year - we have this for ds1
When you need to buy more miles the price goes down if the app has scored them favourably when they drive. It’s their own policy (on our car) so they build up no claims too

Floralnomad · 17/12/2023 15:20

I added my recently passed daughter for a couple of months on my Direct line policy and it cost £20 .

lightthetable · 17/12/2023 17:06

Try Veygo, we did this to cover a week over Christmas last year for Ds. Instant quote and the best part is it doesn't affect your insurance as it is a separate policy. The only condition is that the car is fully insured for someone else, ie you. If your car is relatively new be aware I don't think it covers any Gap insurance you may have.

hugohumbug · 17/12/2023 17:41

Cuvva offer temp insurance. Even by the hour apparently.
