Can you apply for normal course and Foundation Year course at same Uni

Hi there, my dd is interested in studying Psychology and she really like Surrey University. The typical offer is ABB but if you do a Foundation Year, the offer is CCC. Whilst she hopes to be able to gain ABB, she may not. Is it possible to put both the BSc three course on the UCAS form as well as the Foundation Year course at the same Uni? If so, would there be any disadvantage in doing so, eg if her predicated grades are ABC, they don't offer her a place on the main course and only offer the Foundation Year instead...whereas they might consider her with ABC if we don't put down the Foundation Year option?

Foundation year, is that not for people who have not done the 'right' a levels for the degree. So they can catch up on the psychology/ science ones?

no I think you can only apply to the one, and they should tell you what subjects they take into consideration in the normal course

I understood that the Foundation Year entry was for if you missed the entry requirement grades as well.

I suggest you contact uni admissions to ask what they’d suggest.
Some do automatically consider for foundation or related courses If miss the grade.

The following year then maybe? Calling registry people... anyone know?

Former Russell Group admissions tutor here (STEM field). My well regarded university believes that one of the purposes of the FY is to give a second chance to students who very much want to come here, but don’t have the grades.

I agree with @Rummikub , except that generally email is the best way to correspond with the admissions team. Or, if she is willing to use up two UCAS spots, DD could go ahead and apply to both.

On a competitive course ABC probably won’t garner an offer if the requirement is BBB, but the question is very reasonable. In a slower year it probably will. Best wishes to your DD

You can apply to both assuming your daughter meets any additional criteria for the Foundation Year (some are only open to WP students for instance). Some students do that and use the foundation as an insurance and non foundation as firm - totally normal.

can you still get into non foundation if you apply to both?

poetryandwine · 14/12/2023 10:33

Yes, @Tinnysphere147 Both units will assess the application independently

Update: my dd put both the normal course and the Foundation on her UCAS for her favourite Uni and got offers for both courses and, in fact, the offer for the normal course was a great offer (typical offer on website for her course is listed as ABB and she got a BBC offer) as well as a lower than typical offer for the Foundation Course so we're very pleased with that. Good luck everyone.
