University of Bath and Lack of Accommodation

user1499372811 · 06/09/2023 19:00

Hi all, my DD was offered a place at the University of Bath via clearing - she achieved 2 A* and 2As. She was offered a shared accommodation which she immediately accepted. With just 2 weeks to go the university emailed her today to say that the demand for accommodation has exceeded supply and so she must either find private accommodation or defer for 1 year. We cannot believe it! Does anyone have any suggestions?

Did they make any promises about housing students who got a place through clearing?

KittyMcKitty · 06/09/2023 19:04

Did they explain why she couldn’t have the accommodation previously offered? Had she signed an agreement / paid a deposit?

AtoBtoC · 06/09/2023 19:12

What do her grades have to do with anything? Are you implying she should have priority for accommodation because she for high grades?

flotsomandjetsome · 06/09/2023 19:23

There are students with insurance places told today there is no accommodation for them

BeyondMyWits · 06/09/2023 19:34

Would get on the local student accommodation groups, always people looking for a housemate after drop outs this time of year. May be pot luck, but if they really want to go this year it is pretty much the only option... unless you are loaded financially.

Bath only guarantees accommodation in first year to students who firm it, unfortunately. Or at least, it did last year. My daughter knew a couple of people who had Bath as their insurance and went into accommodation with Bath Spa students iirc. Though it seems dreadfully unfair that you were told there was a room and then that was withdrawn. Had you signed the agreement for that already?

I've seen a couple of Facebook groups set up for Bath accommodation and student room hunting.

Hope you manage to find something.

And why do you have to pass comment?

AtoBtoC · 06/09/2023 20:23

If people don’t pass comment then a discussion forum wouldn’t function would it. It’s a perfectly legitimate question, grades were utterly irrelevant to the problem being described.

Hefty whiff of chips on that shoulder.

AtoBtoC · 06/09/2023 20:51

My DD is off to Oxford with better grades than that so no, I don’t have a chip but thanks for checking.

SoIinvictus · 06/09/2023 21:03

Sounds like the Bath students dodged a bullet then if the adage about apples not falling far from trees is true.

"Better grades" might not make for better people eh?

Now off you pop seeing as yours are going to York and Oxford because we're trying to help somebody out here whose child is probably feeling a bit devastated right now.

There's a Bath University Parents group on FB, set up recently as an offshoot of Wiwi, don't know if you're a member- a few students have heard the same thing today- no accommodation - might it be worth all getting together and seeing if you can find something? Flowers

user1499372811 · 06/09/2023 21:12

can you please kindly share the details of the parent group. I logged on to FB but not sure which group you are referring to. Thank you!

@user1499372811 I think the previous poster is referring to WIWIKAU Facebook group and when you are there, there is a search facility and there are a few posts about Bath accommodation and parents group for all individual universities.
