Bath uni going to be asking AstarAstarAstar for comp sci

After hearing from a lot of people following this years A-level results that they didn't get what they were hoping, especially in maths, I've just had an email letting me know that for comp sci Bath will be upping the required grades from AAA to AAA (not sure if the A stars work - basically they now want 3 A stars rather than 1). So that's one of DS's top choices out as he 'only' got 2 A stars. I guess it makes deciding where to go easier but a bit depressing that they're raising the bar so much after what seems to have been a bit of a disappointing results year for many.

I do think there are a fair few parents here I am sad to say more invested in what they personally fancy/would pick. I live near Bath Uni- and would hate to feel this kind of parental pressure .

I know that you’ve said that you weren’t keen on Reading, but their support for autism is excellent. DD is just about to start her second year, and although she is still on the waiting list for a formal diagnosis their DAS are treating her as if she has one. It means she has been able to go back into their accommodation this year as she couldn’t cope with the uncertainty of finding something privately.

The campus is also beautiful, she especially enjoys the fact that so many local residents use it for dog walking!

Do you mean me? Cos I definitely am 😂,but then I thought DS should do chemistry instead of physics A-level and that didn't happen so I'm not holding my breath!

What point are you making by saying you live near Bath Uni? Good or bad? Or was it just an observation?

Oh that sounds really lovely. It's fantastic to know that she has been allowed back into their accommodation so thanks for that information, definitely worth considering.

Risky but could he go to bath through clearing and then swap courses once he’s in? I went to bath through clearing.. I have to say I found the town quite boring as a student as it’s quite small. I think it depends where you’re from - I don’t know many from my student days who came from London, lots from more rural places. If you’re in a big city Exeter might have more going on! X

Have I given the impression that I'm desperate for DS to Bath? If that's what @Crikeyalmighty meant then it's definitely not right! I'm desperate for him to go to Exeter because it's so pretty and convenient for family 😂plus he'll get a guaranteed low offer which is a lot less stress for both of us! And he's been there for a week so it's a bit more familiar which is pretty important when you're autistic.

I was just surprised that Bath put their grades up after what seemed like a not great A-level results year and was a bit annoyed about it. Oh and then I got it wrong and they'd only put it up by one grade not 2 as I'd thought. Doh!

Actually I have just gone to their website to have a look.

For the integrated Masters the new requirement is

A star, A star, A.

I doubt the BSc is higher.

They also prefer an A level in CS or FM and that probably means if one of these is available to you, you should be taking it.

Yes you are right, I seem to be unable to distinguish between 2 A stars and 3 stupidly. DS is doing CS but not FM, he's also doing a cyber security EPQ. I'm going to suggest he applies and see what happens, the more options the better IMO.

No worries, @itsmyp4rty .

I agree with your philosophy. The EPQ sounds very interesting to me. I hope DS enjoys it!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 08/09/2023 21:01

Is he doing an EPQ? DD had her offer dropped from AAA to BBB if she got an A in her EPQ. As it happened, it didn’t matter as she got 4 A* including her EPQ much to her (and our) surprise. But she still went with her choice, despite other unis calling asking for her to change her choice.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 08/09/2023 21:02

PS I went to Exeter and loved it there. Fabulous uni/campus/city/nightlife etc plus the advantages of being 20mins from the coast!

Yes, he's doing his dissertation on the impact of quantum computing on encryption and loving it!

@MrsElijahMikaelson1 so glad you loved your time at Exeter! He'll get a guaranteed contextual offer from there of either ABB or BBB due to going on their widening participation course which is fantastic!
