The previous post is filling up and as i seem to be one of the few still in limbo, I thought I'd start a new thread.

A place to discuss 2023 A level results and navigate our way through clearing/frustrations/questions and anything else.

It really is, I still can’t believe it. He is now doubtful about the Psychology, he said he won’t be that lucky twice! But it was the B that was the problem so even if he doesn’t get the A star, AAA makes things much easier for him when applying for next year.

clary · 11/09/2023 20:11

Wow that’s good news @mrsconradfisher i knew we would be seeing him at Lboro next year 👌now he needs to have a great sporty gap year plan to talk about on his PS

DinkyDaisy · 11/09/2023 20:14

Very worrying that adding up can be got wrong. So many could be going around with wrong grades. My faith in the system gets lower and lower.

clary · 11/09/2023 20:25

Yes I meant to say while it’s good news here, it’s very troubling that adding up is wrong. What about all the students whose families can’t afford to risk losing the £40 x x papers?

mrsconradfisher · 11/09/2023 20:34

Thank you!

Already sorted, he is doing a Sports Psychology course online with University of Derby and also working in the PE dept of his high school doing lots of coaching! He has been very proactive!

It was a massive risk (and cost) submitting both PE papers but we thought 6 marks on 1 paper was very unlikely.

Ah that's brilliant well done him. Uni of Derby is local to us, very underrated uni imho

Darkbutstarrynight · 11/09/2023 22:59

@troppibambini6
We are in pretty much the same situation. Was on here earlier on and he needed 5 marks but only got 3 marks on remark. Predicted A star x 3 but got A star AB so lost place at LSE by 2 marks....all essay subjects which didn't help :( He's starting law at Sheffield and moving into Endcliff next weekend. He's still cross as had it all planned out, but now beginning to look forwards to it and is researching other ways of getting through the varying routes after Uni. He likes the way the course is taught and realising that it's much cheaper there and that he can enjoy it in other ways ....

SlightlyJaded · 11/09/2023 23:46

@troppibambini6 That is an AMAZING list. Thank you and your DD so much. DD has printed it out :)

@Darkbutstarrynight wow yes that's a very similar situation! Did your son go to the offer holder day?
Dd did and I was really impressed they did a taster session which dd enjoyed. Dissertation was optional too which I thought was great. The chances incorporate a year abroad look really good too. As I said earlier I was keen for her to go for Sheffield as insurance but she preferred Newcastle.

@SlightlyJaded no worries at all. Dd said that's only a snapshot but I will probably bore her to death if I go on much longer Grin

Darkbutstarrynight · 12/09/2023 09:10

@troppibambini6 Hi yes he went to the open day and liked it which is good as hadn't been to the normal open day, just chose it after research. Liked the amount of choice of modules too. He's taken a while to get his head round it but now found a job up there now and happy he has a better room for cheaper rate than London would have been! Looking forwards to it, but bit nervous too as to be expected

troppibambini6 · 12/09/2023 15:49

That's great he's got a job lined up already dd is also nervous but I think once she's there it will be fine!! It's just the fear of the unknown:

EmmaStone · 18/09/2023 15:37

Just popping back to this. DD got a B in her favourite subject (predicted A star, studying it at Uni). She had 1 paper reviewed and has gained 14 marks and gone up to an A. Now emailing her teachers to see if worth the other 2 papers being looked at. A 20 marker went from 7/20 to 15/20!!

Delighted for her (she had obtained her first choice Uni, so didn't 'need' the review, but we and school encouraged it), but really cross that there are probably so many others getting unfair marks.

mondaytosunday · 18/09/2023 15:50

I just don't get it - that's pretty shocking difference @EmmaStone! There seems to be some serious reviewing of how the marking scheme is applied!

tribpot · 18/09/2023 17:26

Oh wow @EmmaStone I didn't actually consider asking for a re-mark for DS' subject that was exactly the same - predicted A*, got B. Was it Biology? He was also well below the grade boundary so I didn't think it was likely he would move up and it didn't really matter as he got the offer he wanted. But now I'm wondering if I should have done. This level of discrepancy is pretty shocking.

We were in same position. Aqa biology. Needed 12 marks for next grade

School advised not to bother

Dd got her insurance

DinkyDaisy · 18/09/2023 18:40

I am so shocked by all the irregular marking. Really not acceptable. My ds disappointed in a couple of his grades but got into university he wanted to so left it at that. There must be so many young people who have wrong grades in hand due to incompetent marking. Whatever the reason for the crap marking it is not acceptable.

mrsconradfisher · 18/09/2023 18:48

I completely agree. School said that DS would never go up 6 marks in PE but he did, the marks he was given were apparently due to marks being missed (I assume mis counted) and the mark scheme not being applied correctly.

We are still waiting for AQA Psychology to come back. He needs 2 marks on there for an A star. It’s been checked by his tutor who is also an examiner and who actually marked the same paper and there are apparently a clear 6 marks extra that he should have got so it will be interesting to see what that comes back as, 10 days so far!

tribpot · 18/09/2023 19:15

I notice that we're not actually too late to request a review of the marking (deadline is 28 September). I think DS has moved past it and wouldn't want to request it but I must say I am curious, is there a systemic problem?

Neversaygoodbye · 18/09/2023 19:27

Discussed this with my DD, she was disappointed in her grades and I think all 3 of her subjects are open to a certain amount of subjectivity being essay subjects but she said she didn't want to go there having got into her first choice Uni. I'll always wonder though.

troppibambini6 · 18/09/2023 22:50

We had a remark of dds English language paper. Got a B predicted Astar. She was 6 marks of an A.
It came back exactly the same. But I think if we hadn't done it she would have always wondered.
