Blended learning - is it still in place in Edinburgh?

Hi all, I’m trying to find out whether Edinburgh University is back to “face to face” or still doing some lectures and tutorials online. Offer held is “earth sciences” and the department ignored my email on the subject. Can anyone give up to date information? DC is due to firm or insure shortly (probably the latter).

I would have thought they were all back to face to face. Strathclyde certainly is

Thanks Pixie - that’s the case in Bristol, the other hot contender. Does anyone have direct experience of the situation in Edinburgh please..?

I asked at the Edinburgh Uni computer science offer day and it's all back to normal.

PS
Except lectures are now also recorded which gives the student the option to attend or watch/review at a later date.

Thank you so much Aurea, that is good to know.

Earth Sciences is a new degree programme starting in September 2023.

It's less likely to also have a set of recorded lectures available.

Thanks Nora Batty - It seems to be an umbrella for physical geography, geology, palaeontology, geo physics etc before they specialise later on. I think those are fairly well established at Edinburgh, although tell me if I’m wrong!

DD is at Edinburgh. It's face to face, although, not much of it for her in final year. Two lectures and a supervisor. There been a lot of missed lectures and now it appears no marking of final work a d dissertations, but hopefully a compromise can be reached with the strikes soon. Tge whole experience hasn't been what she signed up.

maltravers · 30/04/2023 10:30

That doesn’t sound good Whiskers, your poor Dd! How much of this is due to strikes, and how much “no lectures because you’re doing a dissertation”? I had thought the strikes were more occasional. Is this across all universities or is Edinburgh especially bad do you know? Thanks for your input I appreciate it. M

I see from another thread in a post by Xenia that some students have already started/joined a group claim https://studentgroupclaim.co.uk/
maybe this will focus the universities’ attention on settling with striking staff?

One piece of advice I would give @maltravers is that the student should make the email inquiries.

Universities are reluctant to enter email correspondence with parents due to data protection and other considerations. An email from a parent is more likely to be ignored as universities have to be very careful not to involve themselves in discussions and disputes between parents and students as sometimes the parent is going behind the student's back in contacting the university. It is much better if the email comes from the student, the offer holder, rather than the parent.

Nora, you’re right of course! Ds is in the throes of revision though (two and a half weeks to A level kick off) so it’s not featuring prominently on his radar. I think I might get him to send a polite follow up (he was copied into the original query). Thanks M
