Booking private halls for 23/24

On student number 3 in our house but so far have managed to dodge major student accommodation stress and never had to book a space in a private hall. However DS3 is going to Glasgow but not to the university so no guaranteed place in halls for first year.
He has an unconditional and should find out if he's got one of the small supply of rooms in halls where he is studying in a week or two but I'm looking for a plan B just in case.
When I look at websites for private halls they are alnost all saying sold out but don't specify if that's for the current session of for next session 23/24.
Anyone have any insight into when they usually swap over from sold out to book now or do we just have to give daily?

DS has booked a room in private halls. In Leicester, so not sure on Glasgow specifically, but it's says the same in his. His is more like a studio apartment, so kitchenette included, no shared kitchen and loads of great facilities, gym, study rooms, games room etc. most of the students choose to stay in them for the full three years, so lots of the rooms just transfer over year on year. He's an applicant from last years cohort (took a year out and already has results) so was able to book early.

I've booked private halls for DS for Aberdeen for the 23/24 academic year and the halls up there were all showing as having spaces. So I assume the Glasgow ones would be booking now? I'd give them a call there were lots of issues with accommodation in Glasgow this year

I’ve already booked private halls for DS for 23/24 but in the south of England. Ive also been looking in London for summer rentals and they seem to have 23/24 bookings open. I would say give them a ring and chat to them about what is available.

I'll sit down with a list, just wish the websites had clearer information on them, they don't give a clue about when booking is likely to open.

I would be amazed / really surprised if it isn’t open already. I’ve just checked my files and I booked DS’s room in November 22 (ie 10 months in advance of his move in date). I would be concerned that they were all booked.

Wbeezer · 12/04/2023 21:27

I had an email from one hall saying it wasn't available as the whole hall has been booked by Glasgow Uni but their other hall would be opening for booking soon.

Ok that’s good!

DS booked private halls in Glasgow the day bookings went live in November - they were sold out same day.

Wbeezer, could you pl point me in right direction, same situation as you. Thought there are 2 sites for GSA with accommodation for 1st years? Dd filled in paperwork and waiting to hear back from GSA, will make her chase tomorrow

Wbeezer · 13/04/2023 22:50

@VinoEsmeralda I haven't been involved in DSs application to GSA accomodation, he did it himself, I've just been browsing alternatives in case he's unlucky. He's an optimist but I'm a bit bit more pessimistic and wanted to know what might be available so I've been sending off enquiries.
Some of the websites are very vague. Lots of jolly photos but no easy to find info about how and when to apply, deposits etc.
I'm trying not to stress, wish he'd got into Edinburgh, more choice of cheaper halls for first years as it's part of the Uni. Nevermind you can't afford to nitpick when it's such an oversubscribed course.

Same here, @Wbeezer, DD v laid back and thinks it will be fine! She will need to chase tomorrow and starting to look at alternatives.

Very stressful and a dealbreaker if we can't find accommodation at we are over 7hrs away!

Wbeezer · 13/04/2023 23:01

@VinoEsmeralda At least they can't insist she commutes, that's what DS is worried about as we are less than 50 miles away but we live really so public transport would take at least two hours! DS had an unconditional for Edinburgh but not for the course he really wanted, Fashion so rejected it.
I studied Sculpture at art college myself, I hope your daughter enjoys it.

@Wbeezer dd got an update from gsa just now. They have a new system and decisions whether they get accommodation or not is delayed till end of April. Start of exams time so timing not great.

Wbeezer · 14/04/2023 10:19

Oh dear, I don't mind waiting when there is an accommodation guarantee but the uncertainty is annoying.
