Just after some advice about the best way of securing an internship for a 1st year maths student. Are there any good websites anyone could suggest to help. TIA

I don’t know about Maths specifically, OP. But in most STEM fields (I am a STEM Russell Group academic) internships are mainly for students who have completed two years of uni, and most of the processing is done earlier in the year. At least for our students.

Best wishes

@neverending2 Formal internships are usually 2nd year vacation. However look for local work experience or volunteer. Getting out into the world is never wasted. Summer play schemes, cafes and various events are often looking for casual staff. My DD volunteered for the National Trust. Start asking and contacting possible organisations.

Worth checking out options at GCHQ www.gchq-careers.co.uk/our-careers/early-careers/summer-placements.html.

Also see if there are career fairs they can attend at the university.

Have a look at Gradcracker for STEM internships

And Student Ladder

The university careers office should have a list. First year internships are harder to come by but many students do them. The civil service website should show summer placements in the autumn. Porton Down? GCHQ? National Statistics Office?

TizerorFizz · 06/04/2023 23:25

It’s April! He’s a first year student now. He’s not applying for first year this autumn. (2023) That would make him second year! However start looking early. The GCHQ link is dead.

Sorry OP, I did not mean to offend. Worth looking anyway as late opportunities may turn up. I know my DS applied for a few in his first year, including some a bit off the beaten track, though did not get any. In the end an academic within his department offered him something.

Binfluencer · 06/04/2023 23:56

Why isn't your son doing this research himself?

holdtightly · 07/04/2023 07:51

No need to apologise @Needmoresleep no offence taken. @Binfluencer he is doing research himself I am just trying to give him extra support if that is ok with you. Thanks for the suggestions I have sent them over to him and even if he doesn't get anything this year there are quite a few he can apply to do next summer.

Sorry name change fail.
