Medicine 2025 entry

HGC2 · 29/03/2023 13:34

Inspired and slightly terrified reading the 2023 entry threads and how much prep has to go into a medicine application!

DC wants to do medicine, probably in Scotland as a Scottish student, doing well at school but this doesn't seem to be enough! School has little / no experience of applications for medicine as a not fantastic state school!

Can anyone advise what work experience / volunteering they will need (currently volunteering at sports club with hope of job)
what are the spreadsheets that people talk about?
How do you strategically apply?

I have one child at uni and they just applied and got a place, this seems like a whole other level!

Is Anglia Ruskin part of an established university? Or is it stand alone?

Part of Anglia Ruskin University.

Lurking here with a Y12 practising for a Sept UCAT. It's so tough.

Midnight001 · 25/08/2024 19:17

Thanks everyone for your advice.
@mumsneedwine You mentioned on an earlier post that some of your students had received offers with UCAT scores of around 2580. Which med schools were these for?

mumsneedwine · 25/08/2024 23:11

@Midnight001 ones that score GCSEs and PS. Don't want to be too specific as would make those students quite obvious. There are still some where lower UCATs matter less,

Midnight001 · 25/08/2024 23:55

Thank you, I understand

I see Anglia Ruskin (based in Chelmsford) gives additional weighting to those from Essex. Also lower UCAT but hasn’t been mentioned on this thread.

I am a mum of a medic at ARU, he is going into third year this year, he is loving it and he really rates the course and the university. He is not from Essex, I am just mentioning that to show that although ARU give additional weighting to candidates from the local area the majority of students are not from the locality.

Midnight001 · 26/08/2024 15:43

Thank you, that’s helpful as I have to admit I’d ruled it out as we’re not from that area. Think we’re still v close to the UCAT cutoff though…

What about UEA?

Its a gem of a uni, lovely leafy campus

Niceday203 · 27/08/2024 22:20

Is there any hope for someone with a UCAT score of 2670 SJ Band 1 predicted scores A A A ad EPQ A /A*

mumsneedwine · 28/08/2024 06:54

@Niceday203 yes 😊. Liverpool, Plymouth, UEA, Kent, and cording on GCSEs lots of others. Have a look at Notts, Lincoln, Leicester, ARU etc. / ones that score other stuff today.
Avoid Bristol, Oxbridge (I think) and Exeter.

Niceday203 · 28/08/2024 08:00

Thank you, heart set on Exeter or Birmingham or Edinburgh… so very sad here.

Sloejelly · 28/08/2024 08:19

I guess with so many students predicted As, there has to be some way to distinguish between them without the very expensive process of interviewing everyone. But I would be interested in any studies that show UCAT scores above a certain point (2500?) correlate with better performance in medicine.

Do put your postcode in to the checker for Exeter, it has a wide definition of WP and then will take a lower UCAT. Alternatively apply to the ones recommended by @mumsneedwine and get experience of interviews etc. She might feel differently if she has offers and has visited them. There are other fantastic places. Maybe try to pin down what it was about those three which she really liked.

If she still wants to go to one of the others take next year's UCAT before results day. On results day if she has a high UCAT and A levels she could consider a year out and reapply.

To be honest though I would try to manage expectations and accept that they just offer different experiences. She will probably come to love wherever she goes.

Niceday203 · 28/08/2024 08:30

Thank you for the great advice- I fully agree with you by the way but hard to get that across to a very disappointed young person who had stellar practice scores but couldn’t replicate them on the day

We are getting close to capacity, time to start thinking of starting a part 2 thread
