Bristol Offer Holder Day - Any feedback ?

DS has booked onto the 26/4 OHD but all sessions/accommodation tours etc, except for the subject talk, were fully booked.

Been advised by friends who attended last year to just turn up for accommodation tours as noone checks reservations.

If anyone went to today's visit, is this correct ?

Also, did you think the day was worthwhile?

I was there with DS @bguthb90 and names were checked off for every session. They seemed very hot on numbers for the accommodation tour we went on especially I suppose because you have lots of people crammed into a small space. We only had time to visit one block in the East Village but the impression I got is that all of the accommodation is really different (location/ style/ age etc) so unless you manage see it all, most people will be working off the same online info to make decisions.

Interestingly in the accommodation talk, I think they said that students have to put down 8 or 9 (? ish) preferences and Bristol aim to give 80% of students at least one of those - I was expecting them to say that 80% would get one of their top 3 or 4 choices! My take out was that you shouldn't get your hopes up re a specific accommodation! The students we spoke to also said that it was no longer as hard to secure accommodation in years 2 & 3 as previously (but also remember that they are paid ambassadors for the uni!).

It could be worth asking the students who are taking the registers for the various sessions if someone hasn't turned up?

Very impressed with what we saw of the wider university though so hope your DS has a good visit. It was well worthwhile us going and is now a much stronger contender for my son - he wasn't expecting to like it as much as he did.

Many thanks for taking the time for such a detailed reply @PierogiPeter

Think we're going to target one of the North Village tours and hope to get on that - it's a Wednesday so maybe won't be as busy

No problem @bguthb90 - we did the student led campus tour which was well worth it for us knowing little really about the area of Bristol & the uni. You had to register in Beacon House but the actual tour group met outside and it was all so busy that you could easily tailgate a group by just hanging around and joining in ;)

The general accommodation presentation really didn't give you much more info than you can get online and I ended up staying for DS's subject talk instead of going on the parent's talk as more keen to see the standard of teaching. Pertinent question is how much is still delivered online as they were a little cagey about that and is something DS needs to delve into.

Below link they signposted in the accommodation talk - it's online but we hadn't found it before and it's a useful comparison (if I've linked correctly!)

My DS1 had booked for this date (Physics) and the subject chat was the only bookable option as all others were already full. The Loughborough College offer holder day for DS2 then came through for the same day 🙄

I was initially frustrated at the clash, until DS1 found he was able to change to the following week (3rd May) and ALL talks had availablity, so we're now booked onto five! Worth checking if this is an option for your DS too.
