Hi my dd has offers for Bristol and Leeds for English literature. She likes both universities equally so I was hoping for any insight you may have on the course and the uni. Good or bad it would be great to hear any thoughts 😊

Oh sorry, entirely missed page two of this ... St Andrew's is also very rainy. Really depends how far she wants to go and if she wants a quiet small-town vibe or a vibrant city

Do they still all walk around in red gowns at St Andrew's. My deeply sad main reason for not applying there in my day was the red gowns.

Great dilemma for your DC to have @Tindrum

randomers like piggy 😅will have far better insight in terms of English Lit offering at each.

Leeds is about as different as it is possible to get compared with St A as a location. A very significant urban area multiple times bigger.

the uni at Leeds has roughly three times more undergrads than St A. With that multiple increasing further once the other unis in Leeds are added to the student population.

StA has a far bigger proportion of international students at Undergrad level, over 40% as compared with near 20% at Leeds (and Bristol). Plus as alluded to up thread a very different international undergrad profile than pretty much any other UK uni. Almost 50% from North America.

Although none of those things a reason not to pick it. Just very different locations.

best wishes for her decision, and fingers crossed she achieves the offer, for whichever she firms, come exam time.

What a lovely group a very helpful people, thanks for all your thoughts.

So to conclude all three offers seem pretty good, with Leeds and St Andrews edging slightly ahead of Bristol. The English departments are much of a muchness reputation-wise, so module preference, distance and vibe would be the deciding factors and wherever she goes she’ll need an umbrella 😊.

well I went to Leeds and would highly recommend both the city and the uni. Can’t comment on English lit but I had friends who did it and rated the department.
