Does anyone have any experience of this - either in Estonia or a nearby country? DD wants to learn more Russian in her summer holidays (currently in first year at Uni studying Russian.) Many thx x

Kazakhstan would be a better option. I understand that in Estonia (or other Baltic countries) they speak Russian only in certain areas (towns). I have heard about Kaunas in Lithuania. But in overall Russian currently is not so popular in these countries. Kazakhstan is much easier, they all speak Russian there.

DD1 is also studying Russian and is currently on her year abroad in Estonia (Tallinn). She's having a great time but not speaking that much Russian unfortunately, as her host family and the majority of Estonians she has met speak extremely good English and prefer to align themselves with 'the West' rather than with Russia, for obvious reasons. In Narva (on the Estonian border with Russia) Russian is spoken almost exclusively, but dd described it as feeling very isolated with not a great deal to do, and I'm not sure if there are any summer schools based there either.

Kazakhstan could be a good alternative - or Uzbekistan? Might also be worth investigating Georgia.

Good luck to your dd - where is she studying at the moment, and where is she likely to do her year abroad?

Super kind many thx - there is a summer school called Tallin Summer school where she would have 3 hours of Russian lessons every morning and then cultural trips etc every day. I think/hope it would be a "safe" option for her - she has not travelled on her own before and is still only 18 (and quite sheltered!)

We haven't yet thought about her year abroad - she would love to go to Russia but we will just have to wait and see! She loves the Russian language, is in her first year UCL and really enjoys the language.

DS is studying Russian at uni. He is going to Kyrgyzstan next year. It's a safer option than Kazakhstan which is the other country he considered.

Estonia is a wonderful country, but doesn't have the Russian language speaking opportunities that the Stans have.
