Budget for 2023 UAL Student & any hot tips for money saving

This is to exclude accom as that is fixed. There is all bills incl accom which also covers internet but wanted some help identifying what else we need to budget for and a rough figure. Its Elephant and Castle and we are hoping that she will get into relatively local halls so can walk to Uni itself.

She gets full tuition and partial other funding so we are aware we have to meet the shortfall. At the moment before other costs just to pay accom its around 400 a month

So what we have to date is:

Phone - I already cover this at a low rate as an addition to my contract and happy to continue
Travel - not sure what she will need but does have a rail card for home journeys so we are looking more at day to day travel costs in London where she can walk to uni so it will be for socialising, weekend or eve events and also possibly work eve and weekends if she doesn't get a job at the uni.
Food is £25 enough pw
Toiletries ?? Do you allow for this
Socialising ?? Do you allow some for this??

She very much will be expected to get a job and knows this and she is sorting some mixed experience cafe and bar work to make sure she has some experience to put down - any recommends for good earning jobs? Not keen on her working late nights etc.

Text books and stationery - no idea what to allow for this or event what the course texts are likely to be or cost - is there somewhere to find out?

Clothes & Shoes etc ??

I suspect because of the nature of her course she may need to fund a website with a decent amount of storage (think media) so any recommends for this from those with experience wld be good.

As you can see my head is buzzing with all this

If she gets an oyster card she can get her rail card linked to it at a station and get the reduction on that too.

DD went there, lots of hidden costs for her course. Needed a Mac, professional printing for some work etc. Very much depends on the subject.

Seeline - great tip thanks

Lawksamercimissus - its film rather than art art/graphics etc so hopefully not too much of that although there is always something or other. Hence my note re webpage for showreels etc

These days, with digital marketing at the forefront of money-making schemes, she can sign up to various jobs like affiliate marketing, editing, virtual assistant, all sorts of things. I'm like you - worried about late nights, walking home alone, etc. I covered my DD accommodation, fees, food shopping (which she got down to 40 a fortnight through meal prepping and frugal shopping), and for socialising, toiletries, and clothes/shoes, she had to pay for these herself with her jobs tutoring and translating online. This is the opp for them to show some independence, so while we all want to help, it's not teaching them if we provide everything for them.

Might be worth getting her to ask the question of current students on The Student Room, if it still exists.

The other issue we had was she didn't know she wouldn't get funding for the year when she did her internships, which weren't paid. She ended up doing very short ones and getting a full time job afterwards.

Most unis now all reading is digital (and provided) as is coursework so no need to allow for textbooks or stationery.
