Royal Holloway - what's it like being in Egham?

DD is thinking about applying for history. She likes the look of the course and the buildings etc look pretty. However she is used to being able to breeze in and out of anywhere in Central London and I worry that Egham might be a bit of a backwater for her. Has anyone got DC at RH and what do they make of the location?

Thank you for all the comments - really helpful to get a balanced view. She's applying for Ancient History so not that unusual but there are fewer places that offer it. Her other choices are probably Durham (but she is in 2 minds about it), Bristol, Nottingham and Cardiff and I would have thought any of the last 3 would be livelier....

Exeter or York?

mumsneedwine · 27/11/2022 19:33

@londonmummy1966 I can confirm that all 3 are much livelier. I have one at Bristol, one at Notts and I went to Cardiff 😊. And I live not too far away from Egham. It's a nice little town but lively it is not.

THank you - York don't offer it and she doesn't want to go to Exeter.

@mumsneedwine really good to know thank you

I grew up nearish to Egham and still don't live that far. Beautiful main buildings but Egham is really not very exciting. So, if your DC wants more than what the campus can offer and more than "not that far on the train from London", I'm not sure Egham is it!

I had several friends there in the 00s. The quiet types loved it. The super outgoing types all
dropped out. A lot of people said it was more akin to a boarding school than uni

@Lastqueenofscotland2 - thank you for this - having been to baording school in the middle of the country with only a small town nearby I don't think this is the vibe she's after...
