Cost of living payments

Manchester Uni have just announced a one of payment of £170 to all full time students to help with the cost of living crisis. My ds is at Manchester and I think this is a brilliant initiative and wondered if other unis were doing similar?

How are they funding it?

KittyMcKitty · 15/11/2022 12:11

From Uni funds and in conjunction with the SU. It’s over £9 million and is part of a range of measures including free showers, period products and various other things. Details here:

I think it’s great that they are taking a strong stand on this.

I wonder if they're desperate for good publicity after their awful handling of covid which must have really dented their student satisfaction survey results!

@taxguru that would be a cynical way of viewing it. To be fair whilst they did make a complete mess of things putting the fences up in fallowfield during lockdown they have been very good since with essentially everything being f2f last year and this so I don’t think their student satisfaction can be that bad.

@taxguru that was my first thought too! They did so much damage to their wider reputation, it feels like that's what they are known for now.

Just undergrad or postgrad as well? I'm postgrad at my uni and haven't heard a bean...

Postgrad as well (with a small number of exceptions). The SU lobbied for it an UoM accepted their proposal.

Warwick have so far committed £3.5 million to a cost-of-living support package for students and staff: Warwick to spend millions of pounds on cost-of-living support

Actual monetary payments are targeted at the most in need - students from the lowest income households who already receive bursaries, research students on stipends and the lowest paid staff.
