Travel Insurance during Year Abroad

Dd is currently studying on her year abroad (Canada). Her UK uni provided insurance to cover her travel and to and fro and likes of healthcare whilst living there. However if she wants to travel around, specifically to US, she needs a form of travel insurance. UK policies assume she has not yet left UK and even expensive policies for gap years don't seem to cover issues such as delays, missed connecting flights and lost luggage. Has anyone's dc studied overseas outside EU and found a provider who would please?

Both my DC had a year abroad though before Uni rather than during.
We did quite a lot of research and plumped for True Traveller, good on adventurous activities, volunteering etc. www.truetraveller.com/

Haven't had to claim so far - DC2 tomorrow still abroad - I can't therefore comment on claim process. Having been caught out before by poor travel insurance (Post Office) when my husband fell ill in Ghana we are quite particular about looking at the small print.

Thank you, I think she has just been in touch with truetraveller so will pass on your feedback

My DD was in Japan and I found a decent policy from Tesco. I think it was on a comparison site

@LIZS important for your DD to cross check against her specific requirements. Good luck to her.

Thank you, @Malbecfan @Juja it seems as if the likes of Tesco won't cover if you have already travelled out - not sure if it means just for the trip already undertaken or all those in future . Others place a time limit on absence from UK. She is not eligible for many policies over there as she does not have government health policy, but a uni one(although we wonder if it is equivalent). If we had realised it was is complicated we would have organised it before she left.

@LIZS True Traveller do I believe cover if you're already overseas

World Nomads offer cover when already travelling. Big Cat Insurance do but residency needs checking as she isn't UK resident if she's away for a year.
