DD has just told me that a couple of the DC at her school who have sent their UCAS forms in because they’re applying to Oxbridge have received offers already. I’m slightly surprised as I know the deadline for applications is January. DD is planning on getting hers in in November but is now worried all the places will be taken. Can anyone reassure us?

sorry, 15 Occt

Most of these early offers won’t be taken up as the students are holding out for either medicine, vet med, dentistry or a place at Oxbridge. DD has an early offer too but most likely won’t end up accepting

It’s no real hardship to wait until March

Neither of my DC got offers till March despite having applied in October.

They found it very difficult. All their friends knew where they were going and were making plans for accommodation and knew what grades they needed to get. Yr13 is tough enough without spending half the year hoping to get a place, and at the same time fearing rejection.

Most people who apply for Oxbridge do not get offers, so while some might wait to try again, an awful lot of them will be taking up places at one of their other choices.

Yeah I guess I’m thinking more of aspiring medics where the early offers are for an entirely different course ie biomed or vetbiomed.

Yes DS got an offer from Warwick in early November last year. The others tricked in early the following year, final was St Andrews in April or may I think. It’s normal for uni’s to offer as they come in, but they say all will be treated according to same criteria if submitted before UCAS deadline

Oxbridge alternatives always hand out offers early. There will be plenty more to come. I believe they do this process year on year so don't panic :)

Oxbridge alternatives always hand out offers early

Not so and not helpful. There will be long waits for some from the likes of Durham, LSE and St Andrew's. Hand holding is available!

Dd got offers from Notts, Bristol, Southampton, Surrey fairly soon, but had to wait slightly longer for Warwick. Not ridiculously long though. She's ended up at Warwick

Also remember it’s not uncommon for excellent students to get surprisingly rejected. I personally know an all A/A* student get rejected from all their 5 choices and there were a couple on last years application threads too.
They must use very complex algorithms.
