Cardiff Uni, students and coffee shops

Is it worth giving a 1st year student a coffee shop gift card? If so, which chain?

is right by student union and opposite lots of the university buildings

If you're into coffee, there are some really nice independent coffee shops all around Cathays - that's what DD is uses more than the chains.

This person isn't into coffee at all. Generally has a fruit frappe-type drink in summer, or a hot chocolate in winter.
