One of my DC is going to be teaching in Berlin for a year and has struggled to find accommodation. They would like to live with fellow post grad / students / young people similar age - does anyone have experience of this or any suggestions please ?
she is on lots of flat share sites but has had no success.

Saw no one had answered. I studied in Berlin a generation ago, but chatted recently with a German friend who still lives there about the accommodation problems. It is really really hard there and my friend, professional with a daughter, needs to get additional support from her mum each month to pay to only accommodation she has been able to find (which is lovely though).

My suggestions - best chance would be if she can get handed something on, say from people in previous years on exchange who are about to leave. Could her university put her in touch with them urgently. WG shared houses? Being further out, including outside Berlin and commuting in? I'd be pushy with the school too, asking if people can advise - this won't be a new problem for them.

I lived here www.studentendorf.berlin/schlachtensee which was ideal then (though as said, a generation ago). Good luck.

@redmapleleaves1
is your friend not entitled to Wohngeld service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/120656/? or is her income too high?

@Inanun2 DD says that flatshare sites, tips from employers or co-workers are the best bets. But as the winter semester starts in October there will be a lot of influx from students looking for a place to live.

Thank you both for your comments.
It might be easier to find something once there as some flats will not do virtual viewings.

DD is going with the British Council as a language assistant in a school. She is going to south west Germany but has a flat in student accommodation - it is about an hour from the school she is going to work in but probably the best way of meeting other young people. The halls are not attached to any uni and are open to apprentices and international students - she has friends in other parts of Germany doing the same.

Mine did AIrbnb until he got to know the city. It was easier to find something when he was actually there.

DD did Not go to Germany but her second semester In Italy didn’t have student accommodation. She contacted possible student room options around 2/3 weeks before she arrived. We then paid for a cheaper hotel for 4 nights while she looked at the possibilities. She liked the first one she saw and moved in. It is, however, hard to organise this much in advance when it’s the second semester. However there should be accommodation to look at right now in Germany.

As he’s working, does he have a contact at the school? They might well be able to help. Just something to get started. He’s not at university so their halls might not be an option. However look at private rented halls. Also, maybe go for a visit and see what’s out there and narrow your search down. DDs landlady rented out three student rooms. He might not get a huge student flat as he’s working. It’s not the same as going to a university.

I studied in Berlin. I found my WG on www.wg-gesucht.de/ it took a reasonable number of messages but found somewhere eventually.
