BTEC National Diploma result help

Irishgal20 · 18/08/2022 22:01

My DC got their results for the Level 3 national diploma and received a double grade merit pass.

Can anyone help with what this means? I know you can get a pass, merit or distinction but what is double grade merit pass? Is it two merits?

I believe this qualification is the equivalent of 2 A levels so what would this mean in terms of grades A-E?

I’ve tried to search online but couldn’t find anything with the specific description.

I did a level 3 BTEC a few years ago- I had 3 grades though.

Merit is equivalent to a B. And has the same UCAS points equivalent.

DahliaMacNamara · 18/08/2022 22:06

As far as I can make out, a double merit is 64 UCAS points. So the same as 2 Cs at A level.

sevenoh · 18/08/2022 22:08

Do you mean MMP? I know that's 80 ucas points - not sure about A level equivalent.

MM at Diploma = 2xC at A level. You need to check the EXACT title of the BTEC though its very eay to get confused. Mine has done 2x Level 3 Extended Certificate where M is also = grade C at A level.

Yes, the exact description of the qualification is needed. My DS did a level 3 extended diploma which gave 3 letters MMM etc and it was worth 3 A levels. If you look on the UCAS point calculator it will give you the points and you can work back to see what it’s equivalent to in A level grades.

www.ucas.com/ucas/tariff-calculator

MM for a level 3 national diploma is 64 points, is worth 2 A levels at C grade.

Comefromaway · 19/08/2022 00:29

Do you have the transcript with the exact qualification name.

Double grade sounds like a Btec Diploma equivalent to 2 A levels (Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3)

so you get two grades ranging from Distinction star to Pass

so it sounds like it’s M P which means Merit, Pass which is 48 UCAS points

its equivalent to D D or C E at A level

Irishgal20 · 19/08/2022 23:30

The certificate says,
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Engineering with the double grade merit pass.

So actually now reading it out loud, I think I understand from posters above it to mean they received a MP. Is that correct?

I think so

Northerner1 · 22/08/2022 21:16

DB did a btec (a double award and a single award)

MP = Merit and Pass. Like BC. Equivalent to a grade B and grade C.
MM= Merit Merit. Like BB.

Apologies I'm old school from the old ucas points so it's not equivalent directly to BB / BC.

Can you use a BTEC then as an A Level equivalent for getting into Uni?

My DS went for a visit to Oxford Uni with his school and when someone asked that question they flat out said no.

Yes you can use BTECs to get into university.
Not all universities have the same entry requirements 🤨

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 22/08/2022 21:36

It depends on both the university and the particular course so check requirements carefully.
BYEC sports and exercise science might get you into Birmingham Uni for example but not BTEC Sport and coaching.

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 22/08/2022 21:37

you can do single, double or extended BTEC (3).

Many unis accept BTECs in place of A levels. Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and some others don’t accept it but plenty of RG accept it.

My friend got offers for Newcastle, Birmingham, Warwick, Manchester and Liverpool with a triple award BTEC.
