Glasgow Accommodation - shortage

Email arrived yesterday from Glasgow Uni to the effect that if you have not already applied for accommodation, there is none - and not only Uni provided but private lets. A quick scout of private halls shows that many have been reserved by universities.
Email states that if you have not already got accommodation offer, then do not register/enrol/travel to Glasgow without having accommodation in place first.

I assume that this is because results are already out in Scotland, so combined with A Level students who have firmed Glasgow, they are basically full already.

This is very worrying for us as it's DD's insurance place. It seems possible that if she misses her Firm offer she may not find anywhere to live.

Planning an emergency dash up to Glasgow following results if she hasn't made her Firm....

I'm aware a level results aren't out until later this week...

@Nothingfallingdowntoday can you tell me where you booked- I'd like to look into that...

I've just been reading about it on the BBC website. Apparently they won't be able to confirm accommodation for 10 working days (which at this time of year is 2 weeks 1 day) after results come out. Really hard
call if you'd otherwise want to jump ship and find somewhere in clearing and have a better accommodation position potentially.

Bump. Anyone else affected by this?

The number of private student lets in Glasgow has ballooned in recent years. Have you looked on the "my student halls" website? Although Glasgow Uni is west end, there are lots of halls in the city centre area and it's really not far - couple of stops on the subway or 15 mins on the bus.

Our panic is over as Dd made her Cambridge offer however 6 of the private Glasgow halls have been rented by the University which must be adding to shortage in private lets. Such a shame and I hope students all find somewhere decent to live. It is so stressful.

It's being reported that GU has told some 2nd year students to withdraw from their courses as they have not been able to find any accommodation. This is a scandal.

I know someone whose daughter has just started on a MSc programme at Glasgow - postgrad, she graduated with her first degree this summer in England.

She is staying with an aunt in Edinburgh and travelling through every day as she cannot get a room.

We were at a UCAS presentation at my dd's school last week, there was a speaker there from the admissions team at Glasgow Uni speaking in general terms about the application process, personal statements and so on. She alluded to the Glasgow fiasco this year by telling everyone to apply for accommodation as soon as they accept an offer, or make their firm/insurance choices. No explanation of what went wrong this year though.

There is lots of legislation going through the Scottish parliament to make life very difficult for landlords, or protect tenants, however way you want to look at it. Basically making it impossible to get people out. In my day as a student in Glasgow it was very very easy to find a flat from 1 September to 31 May. Those sorts of 9 month lets just don't seem to exist any more. Landlords have had their hands tied and are not willing to take the risk of renting to students.

Just coming back to this thread. I was on campus at Strathclyde University yesterday and saw that 2 of their big halls of resident - Thomas Campbell and James Blyth - are closed and empty. Possibly being refurbed, but no evidence of work being done on them. That's about 400 student rooms out of action. Doesn't explain the whole situation but the 400 students who would have been there will have been taking up private accommodation elsewhere, making the shortage more acute.
