MA in linguistics: which university?

Does anyone have any advice re choice of university for an international student who is considering doing an MA in linguistics at a UK university? Any advice appreciated. Would also appreciate any advice on how competitive it is to get a place and to what extent this may vary between universities.

Five UK universities are in a league of their own for linguistics:

Cambridge, Oxford and Edingburgh are world-ranking. Lancaster and UCL are also excellent.

My daughter studies linguistics at Uni of York, I think it's a very good department with lots of research going on.

@Allaboutlinguistics
For a very bright student, Oxford, Cambridge or UCL (highest ranked by the Complete University Guide) might be of interest. However they are, of course, really difficult to get into. As you might expect.

Other universities that are less competitive are York, Lancaster and Manchester. There are other high ranking Universities such as Sheffield and Kings that offer this subject combined with other areas of study. They appear to be undergrad BA though. Not MA. The Complete University Guide gives rankings of the universities and details of courses offered.

QM, Birmingham and SOAS are also worth checking out:
