Talk to me about UCL Halls!

DS filled in his UCL hall application form today. It's obviously a bit of a lottery, so he didn't spend long agonising over the options.

Not many of the rooms were ensuite. We looked at the hall pages to try and find out how many students would be sharing a bathroom, but they didn't say, and we didn't see any bathroom pictures either. Does anyone know, typically, what the bathroom situation is? Do any of the halls have really grim bathrooms? Are they cleaned regularly or do students clean them themselves?

Similar questions for the kitchens - if self catering, are the kitchens kept clean by staff or do they just have to hope everyone does their bit?

When offered a hall, do they get the chance to look around before saying yes/no? (We live in Greater London, so if it's grim he does have the option to commute from home).

Marking this as DS has firmed UCL yesterday after a late rejection from LSE for economics. Will be looking into accommodation today.
it does seem like a lottery from others comments.

My DH is v sporty too. What sport does your DS play? Mine plays and is obsessed with football; hope he can play through his degree.

Mine is obsessed about football too- both watching and playing. I am sure their paths will cross considering they r doing the same course as well..

The accommodation is a lottery… you are only pretty much guaranteed to get a room in your budget… what room that is, good luck!

Also bear in mind you can leave after the first term or you’re required to pay until the end of year, last week of June, regardless of when your course finishes which is about now for many subjects - some already finished year 1.

Dont forget to take into consideration what will happen in second and subsequent years. Many UCL students live in shared houses in Finsbury park, Holloway etc - not cheap plus tube fares however there isn't the mass rush to get signed up as there is for other universities in typical student towns

@Hopetogouni I am sure their paths will definitely cross. Mine is also doing economics. Sorry to hear about your late rejection from LSE. DS was shattered about his rejection, but it was early on, so he has got over it.

Sorry also to hear from PP that UCL online teaching was a bad experience and the rooms were grubby. I hope both are better this year!
