Are Graduation Gifts A Thing?

Just saw an advert where a father giving his daughter something on her graduation. Our daughter’s graduation is next month and now I’m wondering is this the norm? We’re not parents that rewarded GCSEs or A Levels as we’ve always believed that the reward for the hard work is the qualification. Do parents buy their children a graduation present?

I got a graduation gift from my mother. I don’t speak to my father so didn’t get anything from him. I still have my gift to this day (my pride and joy)

I've done ten graduations so far for my DC and never given a gift as such. I have always done a very decent meal the night before, and that's been the celebration.

My parents gave me a little graduation cap charm for my Pandora bracelet, and a bottle of bubbly. No reason to go over the top, but at the same time it's a big achievement so it's worth marking.

I was over 40 when I graduated so didn't get anything but most of the under 25's got something from their parents.
An owl (wise) necklace seemed to go down well.

LindaEllen a decent meal and being there to celebrate is marking the moment!

DD's graduation isn't until 5.30 as we are at the back end of the alphabet and the hall they do them in isn't that big (thank goodness - we won't have to sit through interminable handshakes while everyone else gets "done" first).

How much hanging around afterwards is there?
We may do lunch beforehand instead of dinner afterwards as DH's health condition means that he can't eat late in the evening.

My two graduated from Bristol in the last 2 weeks (delayed due to covide 19 laws) . We some people were carrying a bunch of lovely flowers and I did joke that may be people were getting graduation presents but not us and no one seeme bothered. I paid for the film./DVD, gown hire, 4 nights one had in an airbnb, 3 hotel rooms when we went the night before for the first one, food, official photo (never mind the university costs themselves as they graduated without student loans so about £75k each twin - £150k for the two of them approx plus their car etc etc so I feel as though I paid enough!

goodbyestranger · 21/04/2022 16:39

Even with student loans and my not footing the general student bill I would say that each graduation has cost about £600 - £700 in terms of meals (there were usually a lot of us even if not everyone could get tickets for the graduation itself), plus accommodation for me and sometimes one of two of the children, depending on who was still living nearby. That's a sizable cost, especially when multiplied up by ten. In fact each framed photo was almost another £100, I forgot to add that in.

I've still got three four graduations to go, assuming all goes well.

A friend gave her daughter one of these prints which I thought was nice.

I like the look of these prints.

I've also seen these custom map prints

  • similar idea.

I hadn't thought about graduation gifts. D1 is 2nd year, I'm sure we'll take her out for dinner though.

My DD graduated 3 weeks ago. We drove her there, stayed in a hotel, had cocktails and two meals out. That was enough.
